@heytomjones @Terry Even if it worked perfectly in its intended role by some miracle (it won't) the US wouldn't even have the capacity to replace it within the timeframe of any conceivable conflict. It's them admitting that guns are pretty useless in a carrier battle, but not committing enough to the missile bit to go completely without them. If you could have a super-long-range hypersonic gun with very cheap guided projectiles, something that the railgun enthusiasts have been promising, it would make sense again, but something small like that and a single gun just looks ridiculous compared to a WWII battleship.
