I'm appalled at the aggressive political cluelessness amongst so many FOSS folk. No one that smart can be that level of naive. Its not accidental. Its clear that FOSS repositories are a very large part of our technological oppression and surveillance culture, powering ICE's racist predations, the worst tech actors on the planet taking the most benefit, and not even paying for it. How do these programmers live with themselves? Is playing with computers really so overpoweringly interesting?Years ago in the cypherpunk days there was a really smart kid doing hacks of a sort I now forget, got attention from some actual criminals, flourished at that, until he got caught. Busted, he was offered a job hacking for law enforcement, and he continued to show up at events and bragged about his works just the same. I and many others were appalled, by this amoral kid, his admirers, and employers. It really was just all about the clever hacks. I guess this is no different. I'm an idiot for thinking things were otherwise.

@tomjennings A lot of very good programmers I knew were simultaneously sociopathic or outright psychs. Maybe purely a coincidence, of course, but I noticed people who take interest in non-tech work also tend to take interest in humans more too. Causation may be absent, but correlation is certainly there.

@tomjennings The hacker you describe sounds like a narcissist.

@syllopsium No. Its the mundane every day sort of open software used to build everything. And it is your and my job to see it that our work does not contribute to our own oppressions! Who else is supposed to do that? How do you think the world is constructed? Open source licenseing should be constructed such that you can DENY ACCESS as necessary. For starters. It is yours shd our responsibility. No one elses. You dont just eork here. You live here.

@leopardboy Omfg they were like a made up person utterly oblivious to comments made by others about the effects of sources of corporate money. I was silently furious for half a day.

@syllopsium To be blunt: yes you should feel guilty if your work contributes to people oppressions. Better yet, don't do that work. Its not always straightforward. But often its reasonably clear, yet people lake this sorts of equivocating arguments.Which is part of what puzzles me, how people live with themselves, knowing they live avoiding making these decisions.

@syllopsium Exactly my point. Its a poor system of regulation.

@syllopsium No one said this is a binary. Its a false choice, OSS as we know it, vs closed, whatever that might mean. Both ideas are made up. We don't need to argue this further and its not the point. The point is we are the only ones responsible for our individual and collective behaviors. And of course people can have circumstance of limited choice, we don't' need to discuss this either. But what initially started this for me was blatant self-described ignorance and indifference by well off white middle aged men. Fuck them, to be blunt and sufficiently polite.

@syllopsium How easily you accede responsibility for your actions.
