“Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you.” — Anne LamottTerrible Software explains their new, self-imposed rule for reading, watching, and listening: “If something isn’t worth consuming at 1x, it’s not worth consuming at all.”https://terriblesoftware.org/2026/01/08/life-happens-at-1x-speed/

@zeldman As a consumer: I’ll be the judge of that. This is such an arrogant / ignorant take IMO.Life happens at 1x; but that’s why we have people experience the same events and get different things from it. Exactly because people don’t experience the same thing in the same way. This is why some kids pay no attention at school. It’s too damn slow for them. Or too damned fast. The lesson is still valuable though; you just failed to communicate well. (1/2)

The idea we all must be subject to the same thing at the same speed to get the same value out of it is - frankly - wrong. The idea that if we can’t all enjoy a thing in the same way then the thing has no value? Ridiculous. It’s borderline ableist. (2/2)

@zeldman Good rule for leisure, maybe. But when I'm trying to learn something or solve a problem, some people talk so slow that I have a hard time paying attention without boosting playback speed.
