Wild mushrooms keep killing people in California; 3 dead, 35 poisonedOfficials have linked the poisonings to the death cap mushroom (Amanita phalloides ).https://arstechnica.com/health/2026/01/wild-mushrooms-keep-killing-people-in-california-3-dead-35-poisoned/?utm_brand=arstechnica&utm_social-type=owned&utm_source=mastodon&utm_medium=social

@arstechnica After reading this article I wonder why it is increasing? Is it possible the bad economy and high inflation in last years are forcing people to find additional sources for food? Or is it the reduction in food stamps?I cannot imagine people just discovered to pick up mushrooms in the forest and eat it. Usually such people are very "outdoory" and learn about the dangers and what is safe to eat. Not so much valid for hungry people without experience....#poverty #foodstamps #california #mushrooms

@littlealex @arstechnica I'll bet somewhere on the internets someone started to spread the hoax that that's a magic mushroom. Mushrooms are tasty and nice to eat, but you need to know what you're doing.

and I'm 150% sure it was "AI" "helpers" that generate bullshit all the time. and this time it went just deadly dangerous bullshit. because in Europe similar poisonings were related to "AI detection of mushrooms". people are totally illiterate nowadays and don't know even simple things like telling apart edible mushrooms from deadly poisonous ones. some bullshit generator told them on the net "eat this mushoom" - and whoops!

@iron_bug @littlealex @arstechnica @shaman007 “Simple things”? Nothing simple about telling death caps apart from some edible mushrooms.

we just went to mushroom foraging with adults since early childhood, and it was natural and necessary knowledge. I can go deep in a forest, tens of kilometres and I won't get lost without any special "navigators", etc. I know how to cook some "semi-edible" mushoorms that have unpleasant taste but it can be neutralized by special preparation. these are things people learnt from early childhood, back in times.

@iron_bug @littlealex @arstechnica @shaman007 Do you live in California? Do you have experience foraging in areas where death caps are common? (Specifically, in the environments of California?)If the answer is no, then STFU - your past experience elsewhere does not translate to experience everywhere. I only search for the distinctive mushrooms, with no closely matching poison look alikes. But I’m not going to generalize past my experience either.
