Ugh. It had to be China with the inflated numbers instead of India.Something tells me India actually has more people than it reports.

I hope so, but every documentary, every video, every report of any sort of activity from India involves huge fucking mountains of smelly, disgusting people everywhere, crawling and writhing like some massive biosludge organism. Cities, trains, traffic, suburbs. Anywhere there are Indians, there are lots of them. Too many of them. They seem to endlessly ooze from the earth. China...Sure, they're crowded in their media, but not like India.

@BroDrillard @Ariovistus This is what I found with a cursory search.Birth and death rate graph by Chinese Government.Graph for UN population data.Note that the death rate spikes, the Chinese admit the famine, and yet the population graph shows no dip. This may mean that the data is smoothed somewhat, and/or that the birth rate far outscaled the deaths but I haven't done the math yet

@BroDrillard @Ariovistus Here's a script to test this yourself. Elon Musk personally wrote this for me.(run directly in browser as root, disable antivirus and firewall, do not check the source code, enter CC details when prompted)I half-assed the data entry here, to be honest, but read off from their birth and death rate charts, and the population graph checks out.You can clearly see the dip in mine, that's probably because there was no inaccurate sampling to smooth mine out etc."Mr. Commonsense" said:>There is simply no way for the population to have grown from 540 million to 1.4 billion between 1950 and 2020.Yes there is. Ariovistus vindicated.

@sickburnbro @wizardmanperson I did.Walk me through why this is "the question".Alternatively it stays looking like you just brought up some factoid tangentially related to Chinese birth rates to seem like you know anything about this topic, even though it has nothing to do with the initial question we were discussing.

OP's argument mentioned that there was a single child policy in place for decades. If the AI is maffing correctly, then the 10 births/year/1k population maps to 1.3-1.8 TFR. Which China didn't have through those decades.Anyway, bottom line for me is that the population stats from China are as questionable as most other stats they publish. Maybe true, maybe not.

@BroDrillard @sickburnbro @wizardmanperson you can't really do thatbesides that I didn't expect you to honestly believe I input 10 and then let the sim run or whatever. The whole point of this script is you can input per year (or keep) and it tallies the total, so I obviously input the numbers they have. If you play around with it for ten seconds, the claim that it "isn't mathematically possible" becomes obviously false, because they hit a bil by about 1980

@sickburnbro @WandererUber i remember reading a few years ago about china having millions of unregistered children/adults because of the one-child policy. One work college of mine that was learning mandarin said that that was also something like an open secret, since most wouldn't just kill their child if it the woman got pregnant (his assumption about women and about the chinese, ofc).I couldn't find much, but AI spited some estimations. Well bellow of what i think it would be impactful against the unconceived. ================Chatgpt: "Yes — there are data and estimates about unregistered children in China (“heihaizi” or hidden children) who were never entered into the household registration system (hukou) during the period of the One-Child Policy (roughly 1979–2015). These cases mainly reflect births that parents did not register to avoid fines and other penalties for exceeding birth quotas, especially in the strictest enforcement years. 📊 Estimates of Unregistered/“Hidden” Children1. Estimates from Chinese census and research sourcesChina’s censuses and demographic researchers have highlighted discrepancies between expected populations and registered hukou figures:~13 million unregistered people in the 2010 census: Analyses of the 2010 census suggested approximately 13 million individuals lacked hukou registration, many of whom are understood to be children born outside the one-child rules. Estimates from independent studies place the total of undocumented or “hidden” children in the range of about 10 million to 20 million by the early 2010s, concentrated among families avoiding penalties and in rural areas where enforcement patterns varied. UNICEF-cited figures (~12.68 million): Some earlier research referenced by UNICEF indicated around 12.68 million undocumented young children, with a large majority under age five at the time of those estimates. Waradana/Bloomberg reporting cited a “discovery” of roughly 12 million children not previously captured in registration data, based on a discrepancy between government statistical books and census figures for the cohort born 2000–2010. 2. Government actions acknowledging the issueWhen the policy transitioned toward the Two-Child Policy (2013) and then ended in 2015, authorities undertook registration drives that retroactively added many previously unregistered children into the hukou system — implicitly acknowledging that a nontrivial number existed. 📉 Why These Estimates ExistThe One-Child Policy (strictest from about 1980 to 2015) linked hukou registration to eligibility for public services, education, and compliance with family planning rules. If parents paid fines (social maintenance fees) or feared punitive measures, many chose not to register second or third children, especially in rural areas and places where enforcement was harsh. Because China historically did not publish detailed figures on heihaizi, estimates are derived from indirect comparisons between expected birth cohorts (based on fertility rates and census age distributions) and official registration totals.📌 Scale and Interpretation~10–20 million is a commonly cited range for cumulative unregistered children by the early 2010s. About 13 million unregistered individuals was a specific figure seen in analyses of the 2010 census. Some reports place a single figure around ~12 million for undiscovered/unregistered children as recently discussed in media summaries. These figures represent roughly ~1 % of China’s population at the time, though the true number remains uncertain and debated. ⚠️ Limitations and UncertaintiesOfficial transparency is limited: China’s government historically has not published detailed breakdowns of unregistered populations specifically attributed to One-Child Policy avoidance.Estimates vary by method: Some come from census undercounts vs. expected birth cohorts; others from independent demographic research or NGO reports. Some children have since been registered: After policy relaxation, many previously unregistered children were eventually added to hukou, reducing the current unregistered population but complicating retrospective estimates."

@wizardmanperson water upon my mill, thanksBut apparently you have to assume that millions of Chinese routinely not only aborted fetuses but killed their infant daughters (even though one could do what you said or simply pay a fine, which the data reflects) with no evidence
