@teto yeah, chinese characters are technically more space efficient, but suck to learn and use.Remembering The Kanji is supposedly a great book for learning kanji and it does seem to systematically break them down quite well, however it uses mnemonics to help you remember which I always found extremely cumbersome. We'll see how kanji goes if I ever get around to it.

@teto skill issue imo, my parents could speak russian very well when they were my age and still could get around when they visited russia (although they forgot a lot due to not using it).english only started getting seriously taught here in the late 00s and just schools teaching it isn't enough, you need parents and siblings good at the language for it to stick. sweden has almost everyone bilingual since they've been teaching it for decades and the tiny iq difference doesn't doesn't explain such a drastic difference.

@matrix you're not supposed to. That's all of etymological interest after "tenderness", the part you're supposed to remember. Just like when faced some random medical word that you don't recognize, you can intuit the meaning from remembering bits of Latin, you can get a sense of an unknown character, but that's not what you're supposed to do. What you're supposed to do is recognize the character.

"A sense of what the character refers to" is enough for you to gloss over it and still get something out of the text. The spell that was just cast must be some kind of ice thing because it's covered in ice radicals, idk

@matrix the important point is that there isn't an alternative path (and definitely not a shortcut) that goes through you first learning all of these detailed etymological breakdowns of character meanings.

@matana I winged English irregular verbs too, but kanji seems 10x difficulty.Yeah that's the plan. Learning grade 1 kanji and then just reading.Thanks for the heads up, I still have a lot to learn before I get to counters.
