How do you pronounce these two words so you can tell them apart?Myrmicinae (The subfamily of ants featuring the leafcutter ants, harvester ants and many others)Myrmeciinae (The subfamily of ants featuring the Australian bull ants)Annoyingly they aren’t closely related, but they both contain charismatic stinging ants— among the formicoid ants stings are less common than among the waspy poneroids.(Are they just phasing out clade names that end in “oid” in general??

@futurebird If I had to say them, as a non-biologist and not knowing the convention if any, I'd stress them differently: mur-MISin-eye and mur-miSEEin-eye (Oo, possible mnemonic, too: "my seeing eye").

@futurebird the two i’s are two separate syllables. I’m going to remember this by looking for the two dots next to each other and treating them as a diaeresis like iïsin-eeVs.sun-e-ee
