@wolf480pl yep! but also reverse engineering them and cracking DRM also allowed, also leaks of proprietary source code are fair game

@andrewrkI'm wonderng if companies would still contribute in such a world...Like, they'd probably continue contributing to upstream Linux, because keeping a downstream fork up-to-date with upstream is difficult when every other company still contributes upstream. But would a new project be able to reach such an equilibrium without copyleft?

@andrewrk @wolf480pl Leaks of code aren't just a copyright issue, but also a trade secret issue. And since you're abolishing copyright in general rather than just for software, it'll mean 0 protection for authors rather than one that doesn't works all the time, like publishing houses could just not provide royalties or just virtue signal a bit of money to authors to have some clout.

@tusharhero @andrewrk You can't abolish something that doesn't exist.Abolishing copyright without putting an end to proprietary software would be a disaster - as companies would take free software and make it proprietary by not providing the source code.

@wolf480pl @andrewrk The GPLv2 doesn't require just sources - it requires complete corresponding source code and installation information.

@Suiseisekiyeah, how's that relevant? If someone sells a device that comes with a downstream version of Linux kernel, and does not provide kernel sources, that implies they don't provide "complete corresponding source and installation information".So it violates GPLv2.If copyright exists, such action is illegal. If copyright doesn't exist, then it is not illegal, regardless of anything that GPLv2 might say.

@wolf480plTranslated from the german wikipedia article on art:Art refers to activities or representations (e.g., music, painting) that have no immediate use for sustaining life.I think it should be like that. Creating art should be an act of self expression by hobbyists and not a means to make money to survive under capitalism. I also believe that code is art, and it should also never be product or service for sale. @andrewrk @lanodan
