the entire setting was not intended to be serious with lots of it as a big joke. it was there to sell the figurines for nerds to buy and play the tabletop game.the orks are the most obvious example, they were a joke race making fun of chavs whose design was 'whatever we want to make work in future rulesets will work for these guys'but various bits of the lore they wrote in like the emperor and massive religious censorship were over the top on purpose as they fleshed them out. as they continued developing the IP over the decades they hired more people who didn't "get" the joke aspect but it wasn't until fairly recently when they are trying to turn it into a video game and tv show property that they really tried papering over the humor part in earnest. but it doesn't really work because the setting was never supposed to be taken seriously

@RMIV @Paultron @Rudolf_von_Goldenbaum It's very Saturday morning cartoonish. It still has aspects of the grimdark crushing dystopia, but it's played for laughs. It also removes the moral grey everyone is bad and not good (but actually aliens and heretics are good teehee diversity) relativism bullshit. Space king + humans good, aliens and heretics bad.

@RMIV @Paultron @TakodachiEnjoyer I think there was a lot of general sillyness in 80's comic books, tabletop stuff, etc, like Judge Dredd, Ninja Turtles, Garbage Pail Kids, etc and 40k kind of emerged from that soup. Saying that the sillyness means "it's making fun of right wingers" is a stretch in my opinion, but that's what libtards try to argue. I will say in the very first Horus Heresy book the author was going for a bit more of a critique/satire angle, but after that it was mostly abandoned either in pursuit of pleasing fans or because it was too difficult to write 100 books that way.
