An old phone with a cracked screen is the new “new iPhone” the only way to one up some with this is to have either an eink screen OR pull out a blackberry or flip phone that somehow still does modern apps in some janky way. (this is elegance)I expect in five years companies will catch on and manufacture such things to keep up. Bespoke and retro— pleasant to touch and use. Unless they can really offer something that catches the imagination of the public. #trends #fashion

yeah, I managed to break my screen again.I went into the little Apple Store and tried holding the newest iPhone. It’s so top heavy. I doubt it would last a week so I may end up getting the screen repaired again. That is if bits of glass start flaking off of it.

@Flisty they are gradually becoming more practical obviously there will always be trade-offs but part of why you go to the E ink is so you can stop thinking about charging your phone —-and just stop thinking about your phone in general

@futurebird I am so glued to mine I think something with a slower refresh rate that's better for reading long-form might be better. And I'm running out of options for ones that fit my hands anyway so why not fully give up on a small one and just have a book 🤔I only ever buy second hand though and I wait until the battery basically can't hold a charge (I am part of the cracked screen brigade) so it'll be a while before this is an issue again...

One of the reasons I just can’t bring myself to get that new iPhone? Well I would be embarrassed to carry it around. It sticks out a little bit. It’s a little bigger and has that … unseemly inappropriate bulge. It might’ve been wise for them to have just released some new colorways the similar form factor to the older phones. I can’t tell why it needs to bulge out like that. It’s not like they’ve improved the macro camera.is this something that appeals to men is that why I don’t get it?

@jgrg there’s no way I’m taking a downgrade on macro photography and *not* getting in the pro so I won’t be getting a new phone when buying a new phone, these are the most important things to consider in order :1. how well can a photograph ants?2. size (not too big)3. compatibility 4. How well can it display photos of ants?

@futurebird How many years can Apple let go by before they grit their teeth and release a new reasonable-sized phone? They can’t ignore so many customers forever.

@futurebird have there really been many improvements to phones in the last ten years, other than just having more RAM and CPU? i don't think so. in the early days of Android, i thought it was pretty cool and liked the idea of being able to access my desktop from my phone in an ssh app, or move files around using FTP or SMB instead of needing a cable plugged in. but it has been a pretty uninspiring journey from "wow cool game" to "ok now the games are all shit, the apps mostly all do the same things, and sometimes i will just stare at my phone trying to feel inspired to do something with it that isn't being a phone."

@futurebird I think Apple and some other handset manufacturers (same with recent Pixel designs) are so invested in their own unvalidated assumptions about good design and consumer needs that they just keep plowing forward under inertia. In practice, anyone walking around with a ~$1k cellphone without a protective case is insane, and the cases end up filling out the space such that any practical or aesthetic benefit from thinness disappears. We'd all be happier with slightly thicker devices with better batteries and resistance to damage, but we're cursed with this uncomfortably-thin-with-a-bump nonsense instead until we figure out how to convince tech bros to go outside and touch grass.

@DaveMWilburn I never use a case. It makes the phone too wide to hold and I drop it more. I kind of hate cases. Especially with how wide phones have become.

@futurebird It's super weird that they've hyperfocused on decreasing the Z-axis while bloating the X- and Y-axes, and another example of their obsession with unvalidated assumptions about user needs. Everyone wants a mini, but they keep pushing phablets that don't fit in our hands or our pockets.

@futurebird Brilliantly niche requirements! I think the 17 has the exact same ultra wide camera as the 17 Pro, which is the one it uses for macro. Their screens are the same, and tougher than the previous generation. The 17 doesn't take RAW photos, if that's important.

@nazokiyoubinbou @OneInterestingFact @babelcarp "Cars" which are now all "light trucks" whatever that means are so ugly, joyless, and gross. At least the big boats of the 50s had exuberant colors like candy and hoods you could sit on ... and tops that went down. They were social cars. Big but ... not like a tank. Everything is gray, bloated, aggressive but somehow also made of plastic. So it's lacks even the charm of a jeep or tank.

@paulc The 17 I think? The "pro" since I do want all the cameras but the small one since I hate how big all of them are. It's just a little bigger than my 15 pro (also the small one)I really loved the iphone SE it was the perfect size although the camera was just "fine" I had to use lenses with it. I no longer need to have a pocket full of lenses just to live.

@futurebird I also have the 15 Pro. I don’t like anything larger, I would have to replace my pants because a larger phone wouldn't fit into my phone pockets. I didn’t realize that the 17 had a weight difference. I wonder if that is the result from changes to make it run cooler.Do you think there is any validity of my theory on why some phones get dropped? Bad pants pockets that don't hold the phone well. Which puts women at a disadvantage.

@nazokiyoubinbou @babelcarp @futurebird I have been a dedicated Sony compact user for years, because my hands are small and they are the only ones I don't drop. They don't make compacts any more - the newer ones are just a *tiny* bit skinnier than any other androids. I found an old one of mine and I could touch my thumb and middle finger round it. I'm now in mourning, as I hold this phone (still a Sony, but no longer very compact) in two hands to type.

@futurebird @nazokiyoubinbou @OneInterestingFact @babelcarp What I’ve noticed is car colors have been militarized. I used to build models of planes, tanks, and ships when I was younger and cars are using olive drab, battleship grey, Air Force blue, dessert tan. It’s a further glorification of the military-industrial complex by Americans.Cars should be the same color as electric guitars, candy apple red, that creamy yellow, aquamarine, etc.

@futurebird @stevo618 My problem is usually that *no* phone that I'm aware of has a lens cap. And since I work in kitchens and live in a physical world that isn't always entirely clean, I have to take cue-tips to the barely cleanable lenses before I can even think about shooting something even close, let alone macro. Why don't phones have lens caps?Seriously, no camera was EVER made without a lens cap until our phones replaced cameras and now none of them have caps.

@futurebird they do still sell the 16 pro, you don't *have* to get the latest generation. You just have to get it from someone other than Apple.
