"people don't have accents anymore"is a lot like "kids these days don't know what good music is"Widely believed, often said, but the moment you get perspective? Totally false. "The accent is disappearing" no... it's becoming more similar to the way that *you* talk. So you can't hear it anymore. This is fascinating to me since obviously I'm not immune. From the right perspective everyone has a heavy accent. From yet another perspective everyone has no accent at all.

@futurebirdI had a girlfriend from Rhode Island who said I sounded like a cowboy. To this day I have no idea what that means.

@billiglarper "Don't we see a homogenization of local accents due to"Yes. This seems to be a real trend, but at the same time accents continue to evolve and diverge. There are multiple vectors of pressure and locations of development.

@futurebird last week someone commented on my accent and I responded, "My what?", believing my origin could only be discerned if I spoke one of two words which had not come up.

@futurebird The excellent last two sentences there remind me of my favorite accent story, which is long but I'm going to tell it.I went to a talk once by a scientist who, like me, worked in the extremely specialized field of fruit fly muscle development. Being in same sub-sub-field, I could kinda zone out during the introduction, which was good because I was completely distracted by what the hell was going on with her accent??? (…)

@futurebird To my ears kids these days have an accent that they pick up from Youtube and Tiktok. And then there is that strange Gen Z Youtube video essay accent that I keep hearing. And that's just the ones that are speaking English.

@futurebird That reassures me greatly. The biggest hurdle to venturing out with my English-language podcast (a foreign language for me) was my accent.Would people laugh at me? Reject the podcast? My language coach at the time, an Australian from London living in France, asked me: Name me one native speaker who doesn't have an accent.I couldn't. I started recording my accent. 😁
