Over the holidays, I tried to switch my Gaming PC to CachyOS, and I gave up. I learned a lot from the experience, but the conclusion I came to is this:Ironically, CachyOS is better for gaming for normies than techies. Normies who would never consider using Linux. If all you want to do is surf the web, and install and play games you legitimately bought from mainstream stores, then it's great. Very little setup, good performance.(continued)

(continued)But I'm not a normie. I want to install mods. I want to stream my games to other systems and have the system change my screen resolution and framerate to match that system. I want to overclock or undervolt my GPU.And you can do those things… but it’s going to be inconvenient. Where are my game saves? Hidden in a hidden folder in the root of your drive.(continued)

(continued)Want to increase the power limit on your GPU? You can do that. But the first four forums I found via search had people asking how to do it, and people telling them they can’t. Eventually, I happened upon an offhand comment that said the name of the program that does it (LACT). And it worked fine. It took me hours to find. MSI Afterburner just works on Windows. I had Apollo set up for streaming games, complete with resolution changing in half an hour.(continued)

(continued)In the end, I installed *shudders* Windows 11. WAIT HEAR ME OUT. I installed Windows 11 Enterprise IOT. IOT being the most important part. It’s extremely barebones, but still modern enough to support the newest technologies. No Candy Crush, no Copilot, No Onedrive, no TPM required, no Microsoft account required.(continued)

(continued)I still hate Microsoft. But at some point I started to feel like I was cutting off my nose to spite my face. And I have a new baby. My troubleshooting time is limited.I haven’t given up on Linux. I still run it on other machines; I just can’t commit to it on my main machine.(end)

@RichardJohnson ya it sux i havent been able to overclock my cpu and gpu like i did running windows... and every single game still runs better stock with cachy and no OC than it did with a stripped down windows. And OC'd system with windows ran worse than a non OC'd system with Cachy. Ill never go vack to windows.

@IcyGrillz @RichardJohnson Either of you tried Bazzite? I was considering switching over to Linux for my "badass" desktop...but I'm hesitant.

@1over7 @IcyGrillz I would not suggest running Bazzite unless you are going to use their mascot as your wallpaper, and are interested in using themed progress bars. (only LGBTQP++ themes are availables)

@IcyGrillz I didn't have the same experience. Games are actually at higher and more consistent frame rates on Win11IOT.Not night and day better, but still. But definitely check out LACT. It was painless to setup. ONCE I FIGURED OUT WHAT IT WAS.

@IcyGrillz I'm running an AMD card, so it certainly works there. I think it probably works on Nvidia, but I didn't look at the time.

@HLC @IcyGrillz I'm really not trying to shit on CachyOS here. It's a great system. I will very likely dual-boot it in the future. The real point of my post, is the irony of it being better suited for people who will probably never even consider it.

@IcyGrillz A long time ago, I advocated for reinstalling Windows yearly. Because it runs like shit after that. Recently, I realized that I haven't put a fresh copy of Windows on my home PC in EIGHT YEARS. So yea, both CachyOS and a fresh install of Win 11 IOT worked better than that install. Because of course it does.I wonder if you are comparing it to an old install of Windows? Also, Win 11 IOT is on a whole over level, compared to using debloat tools on a standard Win 11 install.

@HLC @IcyGrillz CachyOS is awesome because of what Steam is doing with Proton.CachyOS and Bazzite are the two hot distros for gaming right now.CachyOS is a rolling release distro, so get updates, which could break something.Bazzite is a fixed release, that gets updated occasionally. But the thing about CachyOS, is that if you set it up per their wiki, it comes with BTRFS snapshots out of the box. If an update borks your system, it's a 5 minute fix to roll back to the last snapshot.

@HLC @IcyGrillz Snapshots don't require any command line work, either. You can load the last snapshot from the boot loader, and then CachyOS will prompt you on boot and offer to revert to that snapshot, all in the GUI. EZPZ

@RichardJohnsonNo idea offhand what else you've played with for gaming on Linux, but I've heard good things about the Bazzite and Pop OS distros.

@ent Yea, Bazzite is the current circle-jerk du jour, among Linux Youtubers who install distros in VMs, and never actually use them.I used Pop OS a few years ago, it's fine, but not optimized for gaming like CachyOS.

@RichardJohnsonAt some point I may trial Bazzite, but next I can finally build another desktop I'll be starting with Pop first. I was thoroughly impressed with how much it "just worked" setting it up along with how all the defaults were what I would have chosen anyway

@ent Why Bazzite, though? I see no reason to run it.I assume you want to play games, because if not, there is absolutely no reason to consider Bazzite.CachyOS devs are doing the real work, and between them and the Steam Proton devs, things are moving quickly. That's why CachyOS is so much better, because you get those updates.Bazzite is for gay teenagers to play retro roms on.And if something should go wrong with CachyOS, rolling back is trivial. 5 minutes, all via GUI.

@RichardJohnsonGood to know. My knowledge of Bazzite is it's for the same use case as Cachy. Haven't used either of them, but a friend of mine has gotten better gaming performance on some titles in Pop than Windows, this why that's what I'll start with, especially since I also like it as a general purpose OS
