my favorite genre of software is:It's written in language X, and is likely the only instance of language X on any given user's computer

@tauon surprisingly few are, given that packaging the JVM is a bit of a pain. There's definitely plenty of other java-based software you can install, but Minecraft is why 99% of people are going to have Java

also fun nerdsniping question:It's arguably impossible on a binary-based OS like Windows, but if you're on a open source distro, you should be able to get all the source of all the apps running on your machine, so you could generate a pie chart of what languages your computer is running

@Elendol honestly the java version was always going to be here to stay just because it doesn't support mods, which is one of the main reasons to play minecraft IMO

@aredridel oh nifty!fingerprinting binaries, I guess? I know a lot of them are going to have obvious stuff in the headers that you can go off of, but beyond that it gets tricky. I've got one application I've been hacking on that says it was compiled by Microsoft C but a bunch of functions are clearly written by a human in assembly, so it'd be easy to get a false positive on that one

@fencepost a few? Python doesn't get THAT much use as an embedded scripting language because it's not super-fun to embed. Lua gets used way, way more

@foone Hmmm... I wonder how high you could push it on any one language... Nothing's going to be "pure" but I bet you could get prettttty far with e.g. C by making the right choices on a BSD

I bet doing this would result in some weird results. There's probably more than one project out there that's primarily written in an esolang/DSL that doesn't exist outside that project
