@jwildeboer@kkarhan #selfhost #homelab #opensource #foss Hello dear Fediversers,My students want to improve their home lab backups and have come up with the idea of storing their offsite backups with each other instead of in the cloud. My question is, does anyone know of any software or solutions for this? It doesn't have to be open source, but it would be best if it were. The option to encrypt the backups is not essential, but would be preferable. Please boost. Many thanks for any tips.

@kkarhan @jwildeboer @dalai @bmaxv that + syncthing has clients for every os + doesnt require any server or other tools + it doesnt require to open ports or care about natAltho syncthing is also quite technical, its kinda easy to learn. It doesnt fulfill everything what a backup needs to do tho, it just cares about syncing the files without history

@Jain @kkarhan @jwildeboer Thanks for all the replies. I'm not sure with syncthing, as it's for synching. There are a lot of databases and i'm not sure if syncthing handels that ok. MariaDB, SQLDB, MongoDB and others. And synching is not a backup. If the error is synct it's over.

@kkarhan @dalai @jwildeboer true, every tool menioned can break databases in use. Either you sync them by using their built in replication / sync mechanism or you use their built in backup / restoring tools...

@dalai @Jain @kkarhan @jwildeboerOK, doing backups from databases change the whole approach. But even for these OpenSource DBs there should be tools to use for backing up the DB and for the redologs/transactionlogs (or however they are called with your DBs) to be archived periodically.Ever thought of a NAS being implemented somewhere and available via safe connection for all? 🤔

@dalai @Jain @kkarhan @jwildeboerBtw: What is the purpose of these offsite backups? Regular backup to use for any failure and being able to roll-forward to any time you want? Or just a fallback in case of desaster 😱 where you are happy to have some data back but not necessarily the most recent data, e. g. last week? 🤔Sorry for the many questions, but makes it easier to respond. 🤷🏼♂️

@stiefel_fan @Jain @kkarhan @jwildeboer They have local backups, the offsite backups are for #desaster_recovery. You never know, the House can burn down, be flooded or the infrastructure be destroyed by "aliens".They haven't decided yet how often they will make the offsite #backup. Once a day or once a week. I think that will depend on the amount of data to backup and internetspeeds they have at home.

@Kaffee_Junkie42 @dalai @stiefel_fan @kkarhan @jwildeboer :blobcatgoogly: you might want to explain why you constantly post this even tho it does not make sense to me.They have backups locally. They search for a way to distribute the backups to each other. They are NOT searching for a way to make Backups.Every Software stated in this thread optionaly prevent file deletion.I myself and others pointed out that fact already.
