People: “If you want people to use free software, you need to make it better!”Me: “Free software may never be as good as monopolist software, but we should boycott monopolist software all the same.”Abusive relationships are abusive, regardless of the “qualities” of the abuser.#FreeSoftware #OpenSource #Linux #FOSS

@contrapunctus@fe.disroot.org "How dare this free software project made by a ragtag group of volunteers during their toilet break at work only have 99% of the features of [insert proprietary spyware with billions of dollars of funding]?

Obviously, nobody is against improving free software. But the mentality of “use the best tool for the job [even if it’s proprietary]” needs to go.

@contrapunctus@fe.disroot.org I see this mentality as a symptom and an unfortunate consequence of our current fast-paced frantic and increasingly competitive society. People just want things done, as fast as possible, don't care how.A lot of people no longer take the time to appreciate and study how or why something works the way that it does, they don't see the beauty in that.

@contrapunctus Free software is already better than proprietary software anyway.

@Pi_rat@freesoftwareextremist.com @SuperDicq@minidisc.tokyo @contrapunctus@fe.disroot.org Don't forget the proprietary apps almost always depend heavily on hobbyist "open source" projects, without contributing anything back.

@contrapunctus Nonsense. Use the best tool for the job. Reward those who do well. Embrace Darwinism.

@Pi_rat @contrapunctus "Freedom" only exists in a narrow context and when defended by function, which requires Darwinism.

@amerika @contrapunctus I agree - all the proprietary software developers should be hunted down, with only the fittest surviving (none).

@chloeraccoon @contrapunctus @patterfloof they are not trying to judge you. It is unfortunate that you are used forced to use a particular proprietary program (I am too). That doesn't mean you are "morally impure".

@chloeraccoon When a freedom-respecting program is missing a feature you want, you should look for another freedom-respecting program which does have it.Or try to do without the feature.Or try to implement it yourself, if you can program. If you really need the feature, and can’t program, then - rather than shelling out money and entering into an abusive relationship with a restricted program - you can try to raise a bounty for the feature. This is even more powerful when multiple users come together to do it. It’s what the Prāv community does for XMPP clients, or what the Debian Phosh Community does for the Debian phone software stack. In any case, you should not trust a restricted program for anything.

@contrapunctus @chloeraccoon I think the idea of freedom ladder is important here.
