Wandering around this ‘fediverse’ the last few days looking for chats, and it’s striking how much of it is people typing monologues as if they didn’t care if anyone else was listening. Elsewhere you can see some effort at engagement - often for profit - but at least it assumes that conversation good or evil will take place.Sure, maybe that’s the whole point of it. Tell the void you booted vax and avoid eye contact. #fediverse

@lardmotel but that's all social media isn't it? the reason i lost interest in FB was you post something and some people press the like button, there'll be one comment that doesn't engage with the post and another agreeing and that's it everyone moves on to the next thing.I actually don't mind just posting and boosting stuff and not getting any 'engagement' .. I assume my IRL friends see it and that's all i want. It used to be called 'micro-blogging' back in the day and I think it's just fine.

@lardmotel - I've said the same thing here, too, since creating my account pissed at Twitter. Mastodon is for all the kids at the dance who stand, back to the wall, and watch everyone else, then muse in their heads about it - here. Almost no interaction, no matter the content. More like a land full of posterboards, a museum of thoughts, but nearly no interaction. I come generally once a day to drop a haiku - and for the quiet of the place.

@UberZeitgeist I left Twitter because of you know who. And Nazis. But - I understand standing back to the wall - that’s ok - but at least be engaged with the other people also against the wall.

@dj2mn You still have an obvious public function in that you are organising and documenting a group activity … it’s inspiring to hear about the events you run and you also have strong opinions which come across in the odd debate. There’s community in these posts.

@lardmotel half the time I hesitate to reply for fear of being a “reply guy” because no one else is replying!

@lardmotel I kind of know what you mean, but what keeps me here is that the engagement at the only other place not entirely nazified (Bluesky) is too often just wildly deranged in different ways.

@lardmotel AFAICT the people who thrive on Mastodon are those who post several times per day about coding (or US politics, although most of those are just cross posting from Bluesky).

@0mnishambles I can see the point of retro computing talk (after all, this instance is run by the Computer Museum.) That's a craft, and so - craftsmen talk.I just feel there's writing that invites conversation - the variants of "what do you think?" or just posting an image which invites playfulness (which is often my hopeful ploy).Scrolling down Federated Timeline looking for replies is a sea of

@lardmotel That reminds me of a book about blogging from 20yrs ago called ‘Zero Comments’.I feel you. I’ve mostly failed to make new friends here (but at least there are a few old ones:). When I’ve tried engaging here there’s been little if any response. RSD and a shortage of spoons means that I’m not inclined to keep trying, although I probably should, since this place is my last hope for social media.

@0mnishambles Well that’s it. It has to work there’s not much chance of other systems coming good. I lie low on Threads and pinch stuff here and there, bring it back here if it’s tasty. My wife still goes to Facebook and brings back souvenirs from the old folks home. The ‘severed heads’ group still whines and pisses themselves over there. It’s grotesque 🎪

@lardmotel I have to admit that for the most part I am less inclined to be as chatty as the old days. Partly because looking back I was obnoxious then.

@lardmotel On the old mailing list at the very least. I recall self-appointing myself as some kind of judgemental moderator, frowning upon certain messages.

@blurk yeah well they need somebody like that on the so called Severed Heads facebook page. Don’t forget the whole thing collapsing when some twat started a ‘take a photo of your desk’ meme.

@lardmotel I don’t do (and haven’t done) FB, so I was spared that at least.
