Millennials and Gen z keep asking on socials if middle school GenX were really free range as depicted in stranger things. In the 80s. Yes absolutely we were. Why? Because mom's didn't work. And there was a low key blanket surveillance by the moms. Then offshoring and stagflation made the moms get jobs. By 1991 free range was over and organized sports and summer camps provided the oversight.

@thedude33 yeah. My neighbor was one. But at least in my neighborhood it wasn't growing until the end before collapse. He kept getting "dropped off" by the cops too. His mom worked FT which wasn't the norm yet in my solidly working class neighborhood at a call center.

@neanderthalsnavel By the time us kids were in junior high (not middle school) all the moms on my street went back to work. They stayed home or worked part time when the kids were little.

@slamy @neanderthalsnavel Latchkey kids were the GenX era. Both parents working and I am home by 3pm from school. This is when the 13 year old kid was considered old and mature enough to watch the younger kids.
