Food production: perennials vs annuals... This is fascinating... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LItFWbCAjY wondering if Good King Henry is available in Aotearoa or would be seen as an invasive?! Anyone know?

@lightweight hmmm maybe not closely related, WP is telling me Good King Henry is classified in another genus these days after DNA studies.

@stephen so crazy, this weed has only been spotted growing in Aotearoa in two fairly remote locations in south Otago near Queenstown? Huh. Wondering if it's hiding in plain sight, unappreciated, elsewhere? Wonder if it's native? Guessing probably not...

@lightweight this kind of plant thing is so up my alley, I'm interested in growing it too!

@stephen same! There was another plant which was common in the US south west and was credited with keeping entire pre-Columbian civilisations alive through droughts, etc. Ah, found my bookmark (on my Readeck) - it was https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phaseolus_acutifolius - there's a similar Youtube video explaining what happened to it.

@lightweight I've just been reading that the seeds need at least 8 weeks of 4degrees C or below to germinate so I'd guess you need alpine locations in NZ to get that.

@stephen that's a tricky condition to meet in NZ - one wonders how the seeds found those microclimates way down south like that?!

@stephen let me know if so! By the way, I'll have to post some recent photos of my experiments with making my own dosa (including the aloo filling, 'gunpowder' (dry spice & legume mixture) and tomato and fresh coconut chutnies)... So good, and effortlessly vegan except for a bit of ghee.

@jonathanharker whoa, cool! I gather it's allowed here then. How do you achieve the cold requirements.
