@futurebird black eyed peas! I already had mine (went for lunch at a BBQ place and they had them out instead of pinto beans)

@futurebird Oh I thought the no birds thing (means food needs to be prepared by something other than duck fat) was bad enough, at least we don't have to eat cabbage here :D

@emma I don't think this is exactly purity culture. It's more like fun nonsense.

@futurebird Nothing that requires any extra work unless you're a cooking enthusiast and keen to do some! Whatever you fancy, maybe including something nice left from Christmas.

@futurebird To eat or be eaten, the way of mother Nature. There's good eating in a cat, mainly your own New Year diner.

@pewnack OK it is very simple and logical. New year's day sets the tone for the whole year, so what you do on the first day of the year will have a big impact. OK?Chickens scratch with their talons at the earth. Chickens are always scratching around. You know who else scratches around? People who are broke. Always trying to scratch up cash.So obviously if you eat some chicken you will become more like a chicken (duh) you will have bad financial luck all year. Perfectly logical.

@futurebird My food culture of origin has none of this—we didn't have any "lucky" foods for New Year's, never mind unlucky ones—but I have leftover coleslaw in the fridge so why not?My husband is from the US South and you *must* have black-eyed peas with some sort of pork product, so mine are in the oven now.

@xarvos @pewnack The pork is also simple. I didn't have enough poll options but you need to have pork that comes from a place "high on the hog" because "living high on the hog" means you are rich.

@Burn_this_ @pewnack Then you are doomed obviously. (no really, these things are deeply silly and just excuses to run around doing things on Jan. 1)

@futurebird My family, and I think Norway in general, lack food related new year's day customs. I think we use all our mental capacity for "doing the food the correct way" on the Christmas Eve dinner, Christmas Day breakfast, Christmas Day dinner, second day of Christmas breakfast, food for additional family gatherings ...

@futurebird in the European alps it’s pig‘s snout, lentils, small fish-shaped cookies you have to eat head-first, small cakes shaped like miss piggy’s face sans hair, chocolate horseshoes, marzipan pigs or chimney sweeps, 😱 sparkling wine and/or orange juice as well as ${insert local specialty food of your particular alpine valley}. Nowadays the usual dinner is fondue or Raclette. Fondue is clearly the superior choice because there‘s delicious soup the next day. January 1st is a public holiday obviously because everybody‘s busy digesting 🙃@xarvos @pewnack
