My main concern with setting up an instance is that I've never really gotten a clear answer as to how to avoid with things like misskey freaks putting illegal content on your server. Like yeah I can just avoid federating with the certain Known Quantities but there's still a chance. The closest I think I've seen is "just set it to delete images after a week or two" which feels like a half measure to me, idk Also finding a VPS I like. And the actual security that would need to happen, actually. I never really did that my first go-round and that feels like a mistake.

@warmbeverageenjoyer aryanlisting, or just blanket nuking misskey instances? Both @sapphire and @prettygood seem good at managing their instances. When I had mine, I just nuked what I didn't like (pedos and freetards) from orbit

@mischievoustomato @sapphire @prettygood what the fuck is aryanlistingAnd sure I know you can nuke freaks, but that requires constant monitoring of your twkn.I know that setting images to expire after a week is probably the best approach but the stuff of accidentally hosting gross illegal shit for a week really, really skeeves me out

@warmbeverageenjoyer @sapphire @prettygood tradeoffs, it's the nature of the platform. aryanlisting = whitelisting.Anyway, yeah I looked at twkn often, and if I found gross stuff I just killed it. The idea of having had that is also gross, but at the same time, you have to choose the most reasonable balance, imo.

@mischievoustomato @sapphire @prettygood That makes sense I understand it's tradeoffs, I guess my hangup is that all of the benefits of running my own instance don't really compare to the .001% chance that the feds will have something to say about what was involuntarily federated to.my server

@warmbeverageenjoyer @mischievoustomato @sapphire what I do is watch the defed bots (annihilation has one) and then be a regular visitor to twkn to just observe. You can copy my block list if you want, I think its pretty comprehensive and I maintain it. I've actually taken sites off if people give me a reason to, like false flagging incidents from new users

@prettygood @mischievoustomato @sapphire That makes sense Pleroma docs on this seem nice, too Last time I used that one guide that step by step walks you through how to set stuff up for nearly free on like an Oracle vps or something and I basically didn't get involved with backend whatsoeverNow bc of home server stuff and Linux as my main os I have at least a little more experience with this stuff so I think if I do end up pulling the trigger I'll try to get stuff going from scratch maybe 🤔

@warmbeverageenjoyer @mischievoustomato @sapphire @prettygood Two options.1. Disable MediaProxy so you technically don't store and serve any of those images.2. Copy mine or mint's media removal list and throw it into the media remove section of the Simple MRF policy. Chemoable content doesn't federate that much anyway unless you follow people that interact with it.

@warmbeverageenjoyer @sapphire @prettygood I did it from zero too, I think the guides didn't have some information/wasn't clear about something that I had to figure out myself (ditto with mitra's guide I think), but if you know how to research, yeah it's easy. Best of luck boyo.

@prettygood @mischievoustomato @warmbeverageenjoyer @sapphire Unironically lurking mastosoc fediblock is a good way to catch nonce quickly. And you don't have to rely on the few masto instances that didn't disable publicly listing their defeds.

@mischievoustomato @warmbeverageenjoyer @sapphire @prettygood The Debian/Ubuntu guide is a bit outdated (ncurses5 doesn't exist in newer version), but they still mostly work. Alpine is a bit worse. I plan to compile all the issues into meta tracking issues so anybody besides me can work on updating it if they want.

@mischievoustomato @warmbeverageenjoyer @sapphire @prettygood I disagree, the option for media removal is already documented and shipping blocklists goes against what Pleroma means to me quite a lot. That's a thing I would expect GTS to do.

@phnt @mischievoustomato @prettygood @sapphire Did not know disabling media proxy is an option The slowness of media is a potentially worthwhile tradeoff!!And ty for offering your list as wellRegarding chemoable content federating: im just nervous about it being just 1 or 2 degrees of separation awayA lot of people here interact with loli, which itself then leads into the other stuff indirectly Also wignats tend to be pedophiles and there's a lot of those here too so

@warmbeverageenjoyer @mischievoustomato @sapphire @prettygood Baest is gone so people interacting with lolicon are very rare at least in my timelines. Depends on who you follow. Wiz is probably the only one and so far has been walking the thin chemoable line for a while. Btw if you have any questions, feel free to tag me or write me a DM. If it doesn't get hidden by notifs from $current_hellthread_im_in, I'll try to help. My setup is unusual and running at the tipping point of breaking from shitty VPS, so most bottlenecks that exist, I already had to deal with.

@mischievoustomato @warmbeverageenjoyer @sapphire @prettygood With Fedora SELinux gets exteremly annoying unless you turn it off. I wrote my own policies and packaged Pleroma for RHEL, but it's unupstreamable jank. There's actually an issue about Fedora/RHEL install guide for Pleroma from me from probably 2 years ago.

@warmbeverageenjoyer @mischievoustomato @sapphire @prettygood I used to be on BuyVM, grew out of that after 2 years (too much iOPS bottlenecking) and after it got sold to some UAE AI cloud techbro, I switched to OPLink. IO throughput is way worse, but IOPS are better which is what matters more. I wouldn't recommend it much, but there isn't that much great options fairly priced. Hetzner is probably the best overall, but dealing with G*rmans and their tradition of killing customers for posting yuri can get very annoying. Service is great, management retarded.

@mischievoustomato @mischievoustomato @warmbeverageenjoyer @sapphire @prettygood The thing that setroubleshoot tells you to do gives permissions to systemd instead of Pleroma. Pleroma inherits the context of systemd because it doesn't have its own context without a policy.
