One of the greatest challenges that will face Zoran Mamdani is working with the NYPD.The mayor has a great deal of power over the police department however the NYPD is also influenced by non-governmental organizations in particular the police union and assorted service organizations. These are all deeply conservative and excited to make yet another left wing mayor miserable. They all must be charmed and/or brought to heel. There is one thing that gives me hope however. 1/

In the waning days of the campaign. Curtis Sliwa, the beret-wearing Republican and professional vigilante started muttering that he liked Zoran better than Cuomo. This is exactly the kind of person who fills the police union and the "benevolent associations" a NYC republican, a "law and order" guy. So maybe some can be charmed. Those who are too stubborn to be charmed need to be shut down. These guys will work to ruin everything if left unattended. 2/2

The difference between Curtis Sliwa and other Republicans is bigger than many people think. NYC is a big project and to participate you must agree that having a place like NYC is a good idea. You need to like the idea of having this big city where everyone shares the value that it's good that we can all manage to live together. New York is a place for everyone who thinks it's a good idea to have a place for everyone. (So not really everyone. There is no "paradox of tolerance")

The NYPD and its boosters do not really understand what makes a city safe from crime. They sincerely believe that *they* are the only thing keeping the city from the brink of chaos. They are incorrect about this. That is not to say that they aren't important. They are, just not in the ways that they think. My loudest and longest standing criticism of the NYPD is that they do not solve violent crime cases often enough and act like this isn't their fault.

For example, despite the murder rate being a historic lows half of murders remain unsolved. The killer is never caught, blame never assigned. That is very bad. It's good that half of the murders are solved, that's the most important work that they do. And it's the work they focus on the least preferring instead to have "shows of force" and "terrorism task forces" and other silly wastes of time. What would the city be like if 80 percent of murders were solved? It'd be even safer.

@futurebird The main takeaway I had from the candidates was that Mamdani and Sliwa want the city to prosper (although Sliwa's ideas on what would make it prosper are wrong in the worst ways and would make it worse) while Cuomo wants Cuomo to prosper.I think I'm not the only one and Sliwa liking Mamdani more than Cuomo tells me he probably thinks that too

@futurebird what amazed me when I lived in NYC was this very grace, compassion, and adaptability that enabled so many people to share such limited space and resources 24/7 — the subtle dance one learns intuitively to weave past one another — and that there wasn’t a riot breaking out daily seemed to prove our goodness, whether learned or inherent, as human beings

@futurebird Closure rates for murder and other serious crimes heavily depend on the level of trust a law enforcement agency has with members of the public. Witnesses won't come forward if they think the police are a bunch of jerks.I don't know how Mamdani brings NYPD to heel. They're more inclined to let things turn to shit while standing around playing Candy Crush than cooperate, or even actively riot themselves as they did with Giuliani's help. And it's not like Mamdani could call up Trump's DOJ for help.

@futurebird Murders being solved won't make me feel safer if they keep happening. Conversely, a low murder rate seems safer even if few of them are solved.

@mansr Maybe this is why it's hard to get politicians to care about this or talk about it. The thing is the police can't do much to stop murders from happening. They could, however, do something about them not being solved. And solving these crimes might have some impact on how often it happens in the future. Since someone who has committed a crime and gotten away with it is much more likely to commit more crimes.

@futurebird @mansr Plus, I imagine that a 50/50 shot at getting away with it is a contributing factor in 1-off attempts.

@futurebird I mostly just worry if murder clearance rate is prioritized with the current lot it'd be much more "clearance" with little effort paid for accuracy of the accusations.

@AMS that’s a good point to raise and always a risk however, as it currently stands, the NYPD does not engage enough with victims of crime when they are poor people (I don’t really know how else to put it, but that seems to be the difference) they talk to the victims follow up on the crime with great care for *some* victims more than for others. You will find some desperate for someone to pay more attention.

@futurebird There's a lot that can be done to prevent crimes like murder being committed in the first place. Some of it is not the responsibility of the police (e.g. education), but dealing with less serious crime in a timely manner can stop things escalating to murder.
