The FIFTH ESTATE (anarchist zine/magazine) has been around for 60 years! We used to get it in print, at least sporadically, but fell out of the habit, did read it online for a while, then... forgot.https://www.fifthestate.org/It's peak for me, personally, was the ecology era, with Dave Format of Earth First! and Murray Bookchin both writing, it got fairly heavy, but was truly a great time for the rag. I think it starts here: https://www.fifthestate.org/archive/327-fall-1987/how-deep-is-deep-ecology/Their back and forth went on for a couple of years and was great reading. I just purchased a print subscription, $20. They're down to a couple issues a year; I think all these hanging-in-there people are getting drained. I've talked to even more people-younger-than-me non-tech folk, (20s - 40s) just disgusted with the internet, just dropping it. I'm looking elsewhere.

@tomjennings holy shit, that is the fifth estate that started out in detroit. i used to hang out in their office on weekends in the sixties, running off antiwar leaflets on their gestetner (while the MC5 practiced next door).one time after a long day turning a crank, i got invited upstairs where a bunch of people — including the legendary john sinclair — were passing joints sitting cross-legged in a circle surrounding a drippy candle in a wine bottle. first time i got high. i was 15.

@peterhoneyman Yes, the detroit anarchists! LOL that's really funny. I thought they were all a bit insufferable then, but I think I just wasn't patient enough then. I appreciate their clarity today.Small world! MC5 next door?!! YOW!

@tomjennings yeah, the fifth estate, the student mobilization committee, john sinclair and his band of revolutionaries, and the MC5 all co-occupied a (since demolished) building on the southwest corner of warren and the lodge freeway, near the wayne state university campus and about a mile from my high school. it was point zero for counter-cultural activism in the sixties.

@tomjennings @peterhoneyman Huh. Growing up in Canada (not near Windsor), I only knew of the numbered estate below:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fifth_Estate_(TV_program)

@peterhoneyman Sigh, that's a bit cringe I admit... probably just as well my memory is not good! But they've persisted, and they did get more sensible. The deep ecology stuff -- which I will NOT be revisiting much! -- I remember as fascinating, in spite of Dave Forman being Dave Forman. Meh, I remember them fondly, good or bad, I'll hopefully enjoy my subscription.
