I'm worried about the Democrats. I'm hearing some of them saying how delighted they are that everyone "even independents" hates Trump and they think "this means we win, right?"WRONG. Have ya'll learned nothing? You do not get to win just because Republicans are terrible. Democrats need to pick some *powerful* enemies. You can't be friends with everyone and win. Trump understood this: picked liberal academia as his enemy.

There are many powerful interest groups in US politics. Democrats try to stay on good terms with all of them. This makes it very hard to trust Democrats. This is why people won't show up and vote even as the Republicans make this worse. Pick a few somewhat powerful enemies. For example? The oil people and bosses (anyone who wants wages low and workplaces dangerous.)Don't tell me you are "partnering with local business leaders" Disgusting.

@futurebird But we're the good guys, no? So we should win?Hides in a cave...We have upcoming elections in the "canton de Vaud", a deficit in our canton, and they want to cut taxes even more! Of course, the deficit to the right just means that the expenses of the government are too high. And they don't care that public services degrade, they have the money to have their own services...

@futurebird If your victory condition is "everyone likes us" you can't do politics very well.I would say that the core problem is that an embrace of facts and utility (anything in the vicinity of the greatest good for the greatest number) leads to cultural extinction for a whole lot of things. (Patriarchy. Nigh-all religious authority. Corporations. Incumbency.)One can be for that, or against that, or try to pretend it's not a question.

@futurebird This is a fundamental misunderstanding of who the Democrats work for. They work for the oil people and bosses, not for their voters.

@futurebird in the end, "we are Republican lite" is not that compelling.

To be clear I, personally would prefer immensely that they would win. Their inability to keep power has material real impacts on my life and the lives of people I care about. But, that isn't as true or as obvious to many people. So, unless there is a tone shift what we have seen will only get worse.

@futurebird It's somewhat similar in Germany, with a broader party landscape. Our closest equivalent to the Democrats may be the Greens, who really aren't that "green" anymore, and have been trying to be "lib-cons" who try to please everyone. Most parties put on friendly faces, and I don't think that anyone wants to see that anymore, because it's too fake. What I actually want, is a "difficult compromise for everyone" - because it's realistic.

@futurebird "Have ya'll learned nothing? "Nope. In Clinton we had a schoolteacher; "Wash behind your ears, eat your vegetables candidate. We voted for the "bad" guy.In Harris we had a black woman. We voted for the sex offender.Nothing really important happens in (US) politics without an economic depression.

@futurebird Thinking about the time that Ocasio-Cortez organized the opposition to Amazon HQ in Queens and all the Dem leadership could do was harangue her about “the 25,000 jobs”
