New blog post! I wrote about Father Christmas, the weirdly barebones Japan-exclusive CD-ROM game based on the British storybook. It's... not very good, so I didn't have much to say, but I *did* find some interesting stuff in here anyway.https://cdrom.ca/games/2025/12/24/father-christmas.html

Biggest surprise: I found a complete set of text and image resources in English! Seems the British team wrote the game in English and the publisher translated.Tried running the game with them, but the final game isn't set up for English - forced double-wide text and no proper linebreaks. Also crashes periodically. If the game were better I might care to try fixing that, but since it's not fun it's not really worth the effort.

The Saturn version seems to use the same script format, but I didn't bother trying to insert the script. I know the Saturn version also has double-width English characters without hacking so I don't imagine it would work any better.

This also answers the other thing I'd always wondered about. The Saturn version looks absolutely awful, with weirdly stretched-out sprites, but the English internet claimed it was only a Saturn game. Finding the PC version explains it; the art was drawn for high-res PC and not all converted properly.
