the ram in my gaming PC is worth ten times how much I paid for it a few months agoRIP CIO IT budgets, just as a spoiler - they'll burn through it in the next few months. Also RIP their blood pressure when they get their Azure bill and E5 renewal quote.

Their bills shouldn't change though. The big companies enter into dedicated/reserved prices for AWS/Azure instances. The reason ram prices are insane is because Micron has exited the consumer market and Samsung has cut back a lot. Even though a lot of the specialty high-bandwidth memory is getting soldered directly to nvidia compute units, they should still be demand for a ton of expensive RDIMMs, Registered ECC and other modular enterprise shit.If MSI, ASRock, et. al. others are smart, they'll have designs up last week for AM5 consumer boards that take server ram in in anticipation of cashing in on the bubble explosion.

For those who haven't got the backstory here, a GenAI company basically pre-ordered 40% of the world's RAM to lock out competitors... then Micron, who make their profits by making RAM, decided to also stop making RAM to chase GenAI fad. So now PCs and servers are basically unaffordable. Nobody is quite sure what will happen.

@djsumdog@djsumdog.com Most am4/5 mobos support unregistered ecc as is. They don't really make those to the same speeds/latency specs as non ecc tho. Not aware of any benchmark comparing them. But ryzens do like a pretty specific ram speed that ecc may not exist for.

@GossiTheDog congratulations. The software they want everyone to use so that they can (maybe) turn a profit cannot be used because the components to build a pc, even a prefabs are now astronomically expensive.

@GossiTheDog its like the best of the late 80s and early 90s when computers were astronomically expensive. Like, thousands of dollars.

@da_667 @GossiTheDog this is full on unprecedented. The 80's and 90's never, ever got this bad. We are literally at the point where specs that would be marginal 8 years ago are rapidly crossing into 'or I could buy a car' territory.A system with a straight up unusable 16GB, 7800X3D, basic B850, 4070, and 1TB SSD will now cost you over $2,500.

@rootwyrm @da_667 @GossiTheDog I keep hearing about 16 GB RAM being unusable while using 16 gig systems without any issue or slowness, what's the problem? (answer may naturally depend on use case and industry)

@HaTetsu @rootwyrm @da_667 @GossiTheDog It's 14 or 12 GB after you allocate some for the GPU to work with. Then you start slack and maybe two tabs in Firefox and that's it. This in a laptop with integrated graphics.

@liiwi @HaTetsu @rootwyrm @da_667 @GossiTheDog I have 20GB (16GB main + 4GB video) and can run a desktop environment, a few dozen browser tabs, an IDE (VSCodium or IntelliJ), a compiler toolchain (Java or Rust), a spreadsheet (LibreOffice), and maybe a vector drawing program (Inkscape) at the same time without running out of memory.Hearing people call my daily driver “unusable” is absolutely wild. It's 8 years old and I don't even feel the need to install more RAM, let alone replace it.

@da_667 @GossiTheDog and this is NOT with super expensive components. Most of them are so low-quality I won't build with them. This is just the basic trash PC somebody like Cyberpower would crank out and make even worse.Bumping to 32GB instantly pushes into $2750+ territory. With a 4070 Super and a B850. BEE EIGHT FIFTY for fuck's sake.
