I don't care for reach personally, but I've seen many amazing artists (like example above) bemoan being stuck with twitter because they depend on reach for their livelihood. when you suggest fedi art servers, they inevitably say "ok but no one is on there. how can I expand my fanbase to garner support and commissions?" and so they keep dragging along with the ball and chain...

@vitalis @shironeko the frustrating thing is it's not a lot of effort to do both. if you really can't give up twitter (which, in the example you gave is understandable), it wouldn't hurt you to mirror your posts to a fedi instance, either.

@vitalis @shironeko This sixe of fedi's a very different animal. I've tried to repost stuff from artists on SPW in the hopes that people follow them for what they do, but they don't. The artists that make a point to actively engage with the community, like being willing to hellthread with them for a while, seem to do fine, but you have to be "one of the boys" to get respect.Fedi's kind of a bad solution to a worse problem. Either go to Twitter and get abused by techbros, go to Bluesky where it's a powderkeg of hate, go to a stagnant art site like Newgrounds or Deviantart, or go to Fedi where the software's jank and the culture's cliquish.

@leyonhjelm @vitalis @shironeko She's also incredibly proactive when it comes to engaging with people. She gets Fedi and likes it here so I don't think this place is about building reach to her as much as having fun and maybe getting a little scratch on the side from her internet buddies. I don't know if most artists would look at what she gets for the amount of effort she puts into brand cultivation and say it's a good return on their investment.

It's quite the conundrum. It's not popular because no one uses it, versus, no one uses it because it's not popular. Ultimately, it depends on the individual's preferences for social media. Do you want more freedom and control of your social media or have some entity manage it for you? Do you want to reach a general audience or do you have a specific niche audience in mind? Are you trying to profit off your social media presence or are you just posting for some sort of social interaction? These are all important factors when it comes to what social media people use and why. Think about it this way. Why have a website that would cost resources to create and manage, when you can make an account on a website for free and achieve the same goal. Some might make thier own website out of tradition, but it's easier, and probably more efficient, to use a pre-existing one instead.
