@neauoire To be fair the option of letting non-logged users see posts is set by users themselves, not the platform (unsure how it’s set by default tho)

@neauoire@merveilles.town @thomasorus@merveilles.town I'm not sure it counts as "public" anymore, if the user explicitly enabled the opt-in option that prohibits the post from being visible to logged-out users. Attaching screenshot which explains the feature better.

@asie @thomasorus what the heck, that's like a user looking at twitter's move to hiding posts to people without an account and saying Yes, I want this.

@neauoire@merveilles.town @thomasorus@merveilles.town As the feature itself says, it's just friction. As with X, there are many third-party clients which allow you to see the post just fine - except unlike X, these are officially sanctioned tools using public APIs.https://skyview.social/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fbsky.app%2Fprofile%2Frobpike.io%2Fpost%2F3matwg6w3ic2s&viewtype=tree

@neauoire@merveilles.town @thomasorus@merveilles.town The reason people want this is precisely to discourage external onlookers from discussing their posts at all; in addition, Bluesky still lacks the notion of a "private account" or even "private posts", so some use this as a stand-in until that comes into being.

@neauoire @asie @thomasorus What's funny is that setting (as noted) is an illusion. Local-only post on supported fedi-software is much stricture. There is simply no way to view a silo'd post without being on the instance.Bluesky, however, runs on their "atprotocol" which makes everything public by default. Even blocks. So, that setting is about as power as "do not track". (It's also why locked accounts and follower-only post will never happen. People that want that should really just move to a fedi instance or take up journaling or start a group text...)

@andnull@social.nouveau.community @neauoire@merveilles.town @thomasorus@merveilles.town Yeah, the "even blocks" part is especially surprising to people coming from X or the Fediverse - you can use the API to look up who someone is blocking, or who is blocking you. (Don't do this, for your own health.)
