#Holos runs its own ActivityPub server on your phone. The relay temporarily stores activities until acknowledged, then deletes them.Following/followers data is critical if you lose your local database. Should the relay keep these activities as backup (marked processed but retained) while your account is active?

@apps what security and encryption methods are being used or planned? An encryption key on the phone and one backed up on paper or a password vault for stored data maybe?

@apps Best it would be an option if stored as backup or handled differently.Maybe it also could be an encrypted backup, so people who value privacy extremely highly don't have to fear such copy.🤔

@apps Not sure what it implies. May be let the user know the actual behaviour and let him·her to choose whether push backup on relay or not.

@CrazypediaThe challenge with encryption: if your local database is lost/corrupted, you lose the encryption key too, making encrypted backup useless for recovery. The only viable E2E approach would be deriving the key from a user passphrase, but most users won't remember/backup it properly, defeating the recovery purpose. That's why plaintext relay backup might be more practical for actual data recovery, despite privacy trade-offs.

@HurricaneWeaselYes, absolutely! It will be optional. Users can choose whether the relay keeps their following/followers data as backup or not. Full control over their data.

@CafeJunkieExactly! We're planning to offer multiple options:- No backup: local only, full privacy - Plaintext backup: easy recovery if you lose your DB- Encrypted backup: E2E with passphrase for privacy-focused users (you're responsible for keeping the passphrase safe)Users choose what fits their privacy/recovery balance. The poll will help us understand what people prefer!

@ButterflyOfFireCurrent behavior: the relay deletes all activities once your phone acknowledges them, including follows/followers. No backup exists. The proposal: let users opt-in to keep following/followers data on the relay as backup. It would be a clear choice during setup or in settings, with full explanation of what's stored and why.Definitely user's decision!

@apps A good idea would be an automated backup on a Nextcloud instance. That does not work well, at least not in GrapheneOS, if these data are stored in the apps internal store. They should reside in one of the generally accessible folders like Download. Then the backup could be automated with the Nextcloud app. Or you offer to backup to a Nextcloud instance the user can configure in the ActivityPub server on the phone.#Holos

@appsSo, if we vote yes, there'll be an option. If we vote no, it will just delete everything and there'll be no option to disable it?@ButterflyOfFire

@appsL'idéal pour moi c'est d'avoir le choix dans l'App, mais que nécessairement la durée de sauvegarde ne soit pas infini pour ne pas risquer de surcharger le server relai.
