We are witnessing the period of the last of the Indigenous“There are several groups in the community which will have nowhere to go in the winter,” Fredrik Prost, a Sámi artisan and handicraftsman from Viikusjärvi village, told Mongabay over a video call. “It might be the end for all of them or most of them. They have to stop herding.”No Green Transition without Green Sacrifice ZonesEU listed Nunasvaara as strategic to ensure it has minerals for green energyhttps://news.mongabay.com/2025/12/sami-reindeer-herders-protest-eu-backed-graphite-mine-fearing-lost-grazing-ground/

@gerrymcgovern Indigenous implies an original people but historically this is just not the case. History is replete with examples of one people displacing another again and again and again, Indigenous is a fantasy.

@gerrymcgovern But Sweden is so wonderful!"...free, prior and informed consent (FPIC)..., a nonbinding element of international law, is not a legal obligation in Sweden, and the country has not ratified the ILO Convention 169, a binding treaty that establishes this right for Indigenous and tribal peoples."Between this and the Danish kidnapping indigenous children from Greenland, I hope I never have to hear about Scandinavian Utopia again.

@gerrymcgovern And also: I am a fan of trade, but didn't we manage to trade things that didn't require mining before?

@dnkboston @gerrymcgovern We've been mining some metals for at least the last 6000 years, but today's population can't be supported as hunter-gatherers, so technology today is not optional.
