“Immense world” is a remarkable book written with a lot of science but also sensitivity. I try to get everyone to read it. It totally changed the way that I think about how animals think. The audiobook is great. With non-fiction sometimes audiobooks don't work, but this one is worth listening to. (Or just read the paperback)Anyway, if you are looking for something that expands your horizons. Something that teaches you new things and that's ... positive. This is it.https://soundcloud.com/penguin-books/an-immense-world-by-ed-yong

@futurebird I've been avoiding Ed Yong because of allergies relating to the The Atlantic magazine. But this sounds like I should make an exception...

@futurebird You’ve inspired me to checkout the audiobook. I love how Ed Wong’s science writing is storytelling.

@ohmu My impression of him having spent a whole book reading the way he presents natural history is very positive. I also avoid The Atlantic... didn't know he had anything to do with that?

I must warn you. If you read this book you will become a bit of an annoying person who, whenever someone says something like "pigeons are stupid" or "snakes don't have feelings" you may launch into a whole discourse about how "intelligence is contextual" and other wild things. But I was already a bit like this it just made it worse.

@futurebird @ohmu He writes some great non-fiction science books. This is joining the TBR pile, but I've read his "I contain multitudes" and it was interesting even for someone with a pretty good science background like myself. He doesn't "talk down to" the reader, which is really nice.

@futurebird @ohmu I think he did some award winning biology/science/medical coverage for them around COVID and vaccines. But my sense is he's a good writer independent of his connection to that magazine. (Second-hand, I haven't actually picked up his books although I should)

@oldoldcojote I didn't know about this book. But I do know about King Solomon ... Because one of the creatures he speaks to is an ant queen. It's fascinating to me that in most of the sources they get the sex of the ants correct. They don't use he/him. And not just for the queen. The ant queen humbles Solomon. Which I enjoy. "consider her ways and be wise"

@futurebird Great book about how small our human horizon of senses is. Some say you need to see earth from space to become humble about the greatness of nature, Ed Young goes the other way, he looks in detail at the great variety of senses we don’t have. Once read you will recommend or probably gift it to someone.

@futurebird I dated a diesel mechanic student at WyoTech when I was in college. He was so smart. Still the love of my life. Built me a badass VW diesel Jetta. He'd sit there and go through my C homework with me. Even helped me with my capstone project. Didn't want to go to UW. Some of his buddies were huffing gasoline and it showed. But there were some science majors I was like "how did you even pass the entrance exam?". It's not black and white at all.

@futurebird Just in case you missed it, I think that you especially might appreciate that there is also a version of the book that’s geared towards younger readers. https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/744291/an-immense-world-young-readers-edition-by-ed-yong-illustrated-by-rebecca-mills/[A mild disclaimer: Ed and I know each other slightly, I respect him and his work enormously, and the blurb he wrote for my own book still simultaneously humbles and uplifts me every time I come across it.]

@futurebird Trafficking minors for sex is an example of our laws not being targeted at the wealthy property owners. Pretty much all law targets those who would take from wealthy property owners. Targeting those providing the minors is action against those involved in “trade.” Epstein was an exception of a wealthy person getting involved in trade. He should have stayed a user. Then the law would have ignored him.
