Please remember that some of the oldest "investment opportunities" in the history of finance were essentially investing in pirates who'd go steal things from people at sea. It's always been a little like this.

For a period there, the pirate, I mean privateer’s favourite target was the Spanish ships returning from the New World with everything that they had stolen there. In sure there’s a moral to this, I’m just not sure what it is. @futurebird

@futurebird Also, to keep it "legal", you need to have declared war on the flag-states of the victims. We have since had an almost universally accepted understanding that trade is preferable, both in personal and business terms . Fewer casualties, and reduced overall cost. This obviously presupposes that lives&livelihoods of the "other" matter, and that "baking the cake bigger" is preferable to just grabbing a bigger slice. @penny

@futurebird I made up a market rule to explain the #RaceToTheBottom."That which is unethical is lucrative".Consider how cheap slavery is, how cheap strip mining is, how cheap exploitation is generally, and then apply market competition. If you want to compete, you too will have to be unethical, because consumers and clients will almost always defer to the cheapest option. When the cheapest option then is based on slavery, you too will also have to exploit slavery, or be out competed.

@futurebird Also remember that the thieves are often government backed, as in the peeps who sailed east to steal other people's spices, tea, and then land, all protected by the thieves' countries' navies and armies.

@penny @futurebird Fun fact: Piracy in Somalia is funded in exactly the same way. People put up money for an expedition, the pirates go out to hold a ship ransom, and the investors get a cut of the proceeds in proportion to what they put in
