Grounded intellectual work, when it happens, if it ever happens again, is uncomfortable. It tells you things you don't want to hear, makes arguments that threaten positions you hold, points out problems you'd rather not see. The public intellectuals of the past, at their best, did this. Our current crop // slop does the opposite. https://www.joanwestenberg.com/comfort-food-for-the-thinking-class-the-great-intellectual-stagnation/

great stuff, thanks for writing and sharingISTM that arguments that make readers uncomfortable, that they don't want to hear, that threaten positions they hold, that point out problems they'd rather not see earn instant BLOCKs/tune-outs in the current attention economy. readers/watchers don't seem to seek intellectual challenges, they prefer the comfort of their uniform-thought bubbles, or the rage of confronting and dismissing opposing ideas selected to bring about en[rg]agement within their bubbles. the dominance of short videos with algorithmic selection doesn't leave much time for reflection, alas.
