       Sanctioning Russia didn't work out too well. They're now buddies with China."Ukraine" attacked Russian ships on the Mediterranean. High seas piracy can be played by others too. All this points towards destroying international trade on the seas. I'm not sure we're ready for what that'd mean.

       @BroDrillard it's not piracy when a state or state-sanctioned actor does itglobal trade as it exists now was always living on borrowed time. it was only possible because of the artificial long peace following WWII. now it's a drug that's killing us, and the sooner we break the habit the better off we'll be. america is fortunate in that we have absolutely everything we need on our own soil. we don't need a single thing from foreigners, and that's the direction we should be going. not isolationism necessarily, but total independenceof course ideally there would be a transition period of say 20 years where we slowly onshored everything, with intermediate steps like replacing chinese goods with european goods until demand could be fully met with domestic production. but that looks much less likely than global trade simply being broken by war sooner or latereven if global trade stopped tomorrow I doubt things would be nearly as dire as people seem to think. we're not gonna starve, the lights aren't gonna go out. there would be lots of challenges, but the challenge is mainly in having the will to overcome and solve problems creatively instead of giving up because the cheap and easy way isn't available anymore

       @BroDrillard We have all the rare-earths we need within US territory.  It was outsourced to prevent hiring Americans to do the job.  Same with all the other outsourcing to China.  The MIC will get the rare-earths they need from 3rd parties - but at prices which will make consumer-goods unaffordable.See also - most of our pharmaceuticals originate in China - some of those being life-saving.  I am guessing they haven't cut those off yet, because it would be bad-optics.  But, if this cold-war with China heats up, they could.

       We could have been totally independent in the 60s or even in the 90s. Today... I don't know. We're not in any great shape. What is going really well today in America besides financialization and scams? Industry, demographics, education, health of the population, trust in institutions are all pretty bad. We'd need several years of radical improvements (unrealistic) to feel good about where things are.
