RE: https://fosstodon.org/@maxamillion/115750583128266042Super grateful for the investment and involvement that Microsoft has made in open source, and in the Fedora Project specifically. They're joining the project just as other contributors would and becoming part of our community! Some of their impact so far:* Modernizing Fedora Cloud image delivery* Enabling Secure Boot on ARM* Improving Fedora compatibility with Azure* Fedora on WSLThere's even talk of having Azure Linux treat Fedora more like an upstream!#Fedora #Microsoft #Linux

@Fynn @fedora big companies have had their hands in Linux and FOSS for a long time, I don't understand the horror and surprise of all the comments. The people thinking Microsoft sponsoring Fedora means they're going to ruin it or add Microsoft Accounts or something like that are really dumb and don't understand how the world works.

@gianmarcogg03big companies have had their hands in Linux and FOSS for a long time, I don't understand the horror and surprise of all the comments.I think for many people it was seen as relatively harmless or a 'deal with the devil' type arrangement. What's changed is that more people are starting to take the actual issues seriously, so there is a warranted concern about corporate influence over the space. The people thinking Microsoft sponsoring Fedora means they're going to ruin it...And that's absolutely true, just not in the specific ways you mention. It is definitely wise to ask ourselves in our time what we can expect if the majority of our technological experience is driven by corporations, open source or not.But it's not at all an easy problem to solve, not many people have alternative means of supporting FOSS/H development to the same extent.OpenAI's recent stab at cornering the hardware market is a sign that we can't rely on the 'benevolence' of these organizations to steward a better digital future. I think seeing corporate influence as 'tainted' is probably a good policy moving forward, with the way things are headed. But you're not wrong that this is what the reality of open source is, and that's unlikely to change any time soon, so it makes sense to make the best of what is available.

@nelson @Fynn @fedora and that does NOT mean that you love Red Hat or that Red Hat has never done anything bad, just so people know.
