Do you have back pain or problems? If you have had to change your life, eg. avoid doing something, or stay home due to your back or if it hurts often that's "having back problems"If you are taller than 164cm (5' 4.5") you are "tall." (In this formulation more men are tall than women, I'm interested in absolute height here so not breaking it down by gender. Data are bimodal but I don't think it matters much.)

@futurebird I had a hard time choosing. Currently. I have no back problems, but I did in the past so I finally picked "Short have..." 🤷

@futurebird I checked tall no back pain, but I saw your other toot about parties where everyone has to stand. At those kinds of parties I have to stoop over to talk and listen to people. So after a party, I can be a bit sore. I’m not crazy tall… not like my colleague who can’t stand up straight on the subway. But I’m tall enough that it’s something people notice about me.

@futurebird I'll be honest. It felt *really* weird answering that I was "tall", but I followed directions. I'm the tallest in my immediate family, but I'm still 2 inches below average (unless the average has increased, which it probably has).

@hosford42 I think I should have done a poll to find the "average fediverse height" first. As a 5' 0" person ... ? You are tall. LOL.

@futurebird What made you pick 164 cm? That seems pretty short to me but I'm Dutch. Is it some national average or so?Could be that your average respondent is male and therefore skews the result?Whoa, I'm short, compared to 19yo's in my country. https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/average-height-by-country

@futurebird In my case, I know that my back pain is mostly from flat feet, and a sedentary job and lifestyle. I don't know that my height really comes into it, given those factors.

@futurebird I only know one adult shorter than that IRL: my mom. Other short people like to stand next to her because it makes them feel tall. :)

@futurebird Thankfully no back pain. But as a lifelong desk jockey, I’ve started taking preventative measures early on, and it’s paying off.

@futurebird I certainly can have back pain if I don't work out or work out the wrong way but it isn't chronic.

@futurebird Short, occasional pain: SI joint trouble, old issue in mid back from swimming, skiing & over-torquing. Most everything is improved (or eliminated) by regular at-home Pilates.

@futurebird You walk upright but you evolved, for almost the entire history of your species, to walk on all fours. There are multiple, serious effects this has on the entire body. Especially in the back and abdominal organs, which can get tangled up and require surgery because they're supposed to hang on your spine for support but it's not there, it's on the side. You WILL have chronic back pain. Especially if you suffer any sort of minor injury like a tumble or something.

@futurebird What if you've shrunk. I used to be almost 5' 6", now I'm 5' 3". I've had back pain since a teenager, worse now as a senior.

@futurebird When I worked at Griffith Observatory, there were six people who worked on the floor with me plus one more in maint who were distinctly taller than me. I’m 6’1”. Some nights felt weird.

@futurebird At 165cm my japanese wife qualifies as "tall". Perhaps a slightly less petite definition of "tall" might work better?

@futurebird after doing physio for over a year, the thing that has really done the most for my back pain has been deadlifts, planking and pushups. not a ton, just a few times a day for a few weeks, has migrated and shrunk the pain to the point I realized yesterday it's basically* gone (*still not totally gone, but very different now from what it was)
