There are places deep in the earth where the water is crystal clear or it would be, if there were any light. All of the sediment, all of the dust has settled long ago. All of the gasses have escaped. These hidden volumes of water, like houses. Like the space between bridges. The space between you and the sky. Huge empty spaces that are not empty. Frozen glass. The water is still. The water is silent. The water is transparent as the mountain air on a starless, moonless, windless night.

(I constantly creep myself out thinking about huge flooded undiscovered caves and wonder how big the biggest one is... I do not know what's wrong with me that this keeps happening.)

@futurebird Sometimes there are pretty crystals! Again, if there were light.

@futurebird you should probably read The Luminous Dead by Caitlin Starling. It's all happening in the caves (on another planet; some of them are flooded), with only 1.25 characters. It's also so creepy.

@IngaLovinde ooo does it by chance have sci-fi geology? I love it when sci-fi stories have fantastical geology on other planets or some other version of the earth and if it's a little believable even better.

@futurebird not to give any spoilers... yes, I guess "sci-fi geology" is one way to put this!

@futurebird ooh, thanks for the shivers! I think one source of my creeps here is old school sci-fi. This journeying to the centre of the earth business… with all sorts of wrong impossible stuff down there

@futurebird @IngaLovinde If you want sci-fi stories with fantastical geology, there is Hal Clement's "Still River".Which is about planetary science graduate students and has lots of caves full of various liquids.

@futurebird These thoughts remind me of some of Uel Aramchek's surrealist micro-fiction. In particular, of the Invisible States of America, like Pannosia, https://www.northofreality.com/tales/2015/11/20/lucid-datingor Haluthhttps://www.northofreality.com/tales/2016/12/15/haluthMore of the tour guide here (from long before Elon) https://x.com/ThePatanoiac/status/573524874267881472

@futurebird I've seen places like that in show caves and they're always the most haunting, magical places. There's one I went to a couple of times as a kid with a "moses walk" where they built a walkway *through* the underground lake with 5' high walls on both sides and perfectly still water just inches beyond. There's another which involves a boat trip across an underground lake towards a roaring waterfall... which stops as you approach to allow the boat to pass through to the next chamber.

@futurebird Empty water doesn't fascinate me as much as subterranean pockets of wholly insulated life. They tend to get energy input from Earth's inner heat.

@futurebird These are the liminal spaces where the backrooms mathematicians hang out. Being underwater, their dry-erase markers never dry out.

@futurebird whenever I find myself urban exploring, mainly factories with flooded subfloors and stairs that lead to blue green crystal nothingness. Knowing the unknown lurks just a few steps towards toxic tranquility. I fear falling into one and never surfacing. But then I explore more. I think touching thoughts like that do us good. Even when it freaks us the F out. 😅🙌

@futurebird @CliftonR Beginning to seem like scattered pockets of water is a common feature of rocky planets and larger moons. https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/science/saturns-moon-titan-may-not-have-a-buried-ocean-as-long-suspected-new-study-suggests/
