I wonder what that means. I know plenty of married people. I can't think of any that I would describe as happily married. I'm not saying they are all miserable, but I dont see any of them as inspiring.I know that sounds all doomer, but I'm legitimately curious about what folks mean by "happily married".

I think a lot of that stems from media promises and romanticism. People are given these weird and false expectations about what makes for a happy marriage. "If you really loved me, you would know exactly what I want when I want it" or "You can never misunderstand a single word I say!" When I was a kid, I used to love looking at the old couples who had been together for decades and try to figure out how it worked. I came to the conclusion that it's not about the energy, the excitement, the perfect match etc. It's about knowing yourself, reasonably knowing the other person, and seeking contentment instead. One of the scariest ideas for modern people trying to date is "you'll do" because that implies "settling" and that's just not profitable when something "better" comes along.

@ShowMeYourLibrary @Dagnar I think most people are comfortable with the "habit" of their marriage to one degree or another. What you describe as inspiring is very rare in my experience. Finding what people consider to be their soulmate is akin to hitting a winning lottery number. Add to that the elements of timing, i.e. finding each other at an early enough age where you're still able to pair bond and not be touched by jadedness; maturity, i.e. having the wisdom to recognize a special person compatible enough to be worth the effort; and diligence, i.e. the willingness of both to fulfill their roles and not become complacent, overweight slobs which, among other things, all create a sobering reality check to those who aren't blinded by emotions.

You'll Do shows that what you're looking for is the quality of the person, not the packaging. Many relationships fail because they aren't looking at the boring moments, or waking up to the same face every day for 40+ years. And settling is a good thing: settle down, settle a place to call home, settle into a routine, two people cooperating to make a life. All that excitement stuff is gravy, and too much gravy give you a heart attack.

Not every person is meant to be married but most are. It's a gift from God and it's one of the main ways He saves us. Marriage itself is not about happiness, since most people in soul-dead consoomer amerikwa define happiness as "getting my way all the time and having lots of stuff that others wish they had." It's more about being happily willing to NOT get your way and to put someone who is so different from you that you can hardly even understand them first. Ideally they're doing the same thing. Most people are not willing to submit themselves to their spouse, they would rather die. The evangelicals have complicated this by telling sassy amerikwan feminists that the submission is only for women and that they need to shut up and bow their heads.

Marriage has changed me in ways that would never have happened if I'd stayed single. If my husband died, I would not date or remarry, because I want my union with him to be lifelong.
