Which #Firefox fork are you moving to as #Mozilla gambles their userbase in search of people who will train big tech #AI for free?Boost for reach!

@yoasif I moved to #Librewolf some time ago, but also I'm trying a #Dillo inspired by the @rl_dane example, who using it as a main browser.

@evgandr @rl_dane I can't believe that Dillo is actually usable on the web today! Is it?

@yoasif @rl_dane It depends from many factors. E.g, almost all sites and blogs from my RSS subscriptions could be visited with Dillo without any problems. The problems start with:1) Youtube (long live yt-dlp and mpv 😉)2) Reddit, Medium and simular sites (I simply stopped to visit them)3) Some necessary sites like "e-government" sites, some local or niche communities, using all the modern technologies — for this case I'm using Librewolf.

@evgandr@bsd.cafe @yoasif@mastodon.social @dillo@fosstodon.orghttps://old.reddit.com/ is actually somewhat usable with dillo.I think the best approach to surviving the current webpocalypse is to just forget about having "one browser to rule them all."Take a multi-vectored approach:Use a terminal browser like w3m, links, lynx, or chawan when doing some quick-and-dirty lookups, or when you don't feel like faffing about with a mouse at allUse #Dillo for blogs, #smolweb sites, and sites that you don't want eating your cpu if you load them in a full browserOptionally use #NetSurf for the few sites you know work better with itUse #Firefox with your own custom settings or a fork like #LibreWolf for things that really require full JS and that kind of thingUse a Blink-based browser like #Falkon or #UnGoogledChromium for the rare cases where a website just doesn't like firefoxI don't have dillo as my default browser on most of my systems now, but on all of my systems, I have one keystroke to open firefox or librewolf, and another to open dillo. A lot of times, I'll grab the url from @tut@fosstodon.org, launch dillo with a keystroke, and paste in the URL. If it doesn't work in dillo for some reason, or the formatting is too far off, it's easy enough just to fire up the old fox and paste in the url there. Here's a link to a toot where I discovered how to tweak the colors in dillo to be a bit more contrasty:https://polymaths.social/@rl_dane/statuses/01K3YBWR5XE7N781P9F7432VP7Here's a link to a toot with my keysrc file for more keyboard-friendly navigation (a little like qutebrowser or luakit, but only a little so far):https://polymaths.social/@rl_dane/statuses/01K3EQQ78KJG4E07KP74Y6Q0VEI also have firefox settings to disable AI available upon request. It's a bit of a faff to get it set up the first time, but then you're golden (for now ;)

@evgandr @yoasif @rl_dane some tips for Dillo:- Many sites become readable after rdrview, see https://git.dillo-browser.org/plugins/rdrview/about/- Silos like YouTube, Reddit or Medium usually have alternative frontends that work without JS, see https://farside.link/ and https://alex.envs.net/- To play YouTube or other multimedia files, here is a guide to offload to MPV: https://dillo-browser.org/topic/playing-multimedia/

@yoasif@mastodon.socialFirefox 115 still receives some security patches from Mozilla as it's the last version to support Windows 7. But it's the same good olde Firefox code, so you can built it for other operating systems and platforms — and that's what I do! No "AI", no forced WebP support, and I patch it to support JPEG XL — perfect! Some sites might not work, e.g. Disqus deprecated support for it as it doesn't support something called "relative colour syntax", but you can still have read-only access, and most other websites I visit work fine — for now I'm safe.I might switch to one of the forks, but neither of them patch the option to disable WebP support back in, and I fucking hate WebPee. Also, both Librewolf and Waterfox have the patches to enable support for advanced JPEG XL features: transparency, advanced colour management and animation — however these can't be applied cleanly to newer Firefox codebase both forks are based on, but no one seems to care enough to update the patches, so these features simply don't work.
