was there a kerfuffle a while back with people not liking #WaterFox for some reason? I'm fixing to ditch Firefox but I'm still determining what to switch to. #Mozilla

@deutrino@mstdn.io Probably the acquisition by System1 (which is an advertising company) of Waterfox back in 2020. Waterfox became independent again in 2023 though. For me it's more the abandonment of XUL, NPAPI and complete theming (without ever touching userChrome.css) in favor of simply following Mozilla's codebase closely as a soft fork of Firefox ESR. The fact that they no longer update the "Classic" version in 2022 (because they couldn't keep up with the security fixes from Mozilla somehow, despite Pale Moon consistently able to do so every release and is a close sibling to Waterfox Classic) makes me skeptical on whether Waterfox is truly up to the job of forking Mozilla.
