So i need some input.I think to replace my unify gear for european / open source one.And i heavily hesitate between an opensource router with opnsense (from eu).Or a mikrotik router. Can any #network or #mikrotik #opensense #pfsense user give me any input. Also does the one you own provide update / system update to EU server (even as mirror).i need multiple wifi AP that share the same networkThanks#question #fedihelp #network #internet #eu #buyeu @buyeuropean@feddit.uk @buyeuropean@mastodon.social @mikrotik

@lexinova @buyeuropean @mikrotik I think both options are fantastic, but I would recommend Mikrotik.I used their cheapest model when I was a student trying to understand networking, and they have scaled really well as my skills grew. Coming from unify, I think the most difficult feature to get on other platforms will be remote access, in this case their Back-to-Home VPN (that connects through a proxy at Latvia) will work. It's not as easy to use as unify, but it's very functional.

@lexinova @buyeuropean Hmm, not actually sure. My first device is a hAP lite, bought it 6 years ago. It's not on Router OS 7 (their latest) but I think I got a very recent security update for OS 6. Maybe @mikrotik could clarify? I can't easily find something on the website.

@nickglb @lexinova @buyeuropean as long as device has enough resources for your use case, you can upgrade it. We have models that are 15 years old, still capable of upgrading. If your device is running at the resource limits already, it might be a tight fit in some cases, since the latest v7 uses a bit more RAM and storage. But we try to optimize as much as we can, to keep old devices running. 7.22 will actually run better on the hAP Lite you own - recently "trimmed some fat" for this arch.

@mikrotik @nickglb @buyeuropean ok thanks (ask many question as you know moving from one network to another is a big change), where are hosted your update server (is it behind cloudflare or thing like this,), even if a manual settings is needed to remove the US link, one of my goal is to avoir US thing ^^

@lexinova @nickglb @buyeuropean Like I said previously, we selfhost everything here in our own datacenter in Riga, we don't use any CDN

@lexinova Our routers and switches are made in the EU (Latvia / Lithuania mostly) and all our servers are self hosted here in Latvia in our own data center.
