Anywhere with sub-$100,000 houses doesn’t have $25 an hour jobs. And if you find one that is it will need at least half that again in work to become habitable.RT: https://poa.st/objects/cddab04b-4cf0-4c60-9c5f-3c49b7aa2121

@DC5FAN @Terry Almost any house in 2025 requires some work. Anything that cheap is usually so far gone that it’s getting torn down to the studs.Housing being completed fucked isn’t just about affordability, it’s about poor construction and quality too.

@NitroDubs @Terry I recently found a house where I grew up for $43,000.For perspective, this is the only place I've ever seen where the streets are so unmaintained and full of potholes that Google Street view blurs them.

@RaHoWaJoe @Terry A year or two ago I was looking at houses in Jacksonville for around that money and they were completely uninhabitable as is, and in terrible neighborhoods to boot.If the neighborhoods weren’t so bad I might have been tempted.

@NitroDubs @RaHoWaJoe I've seen roads in the hood that look like they were hit by an 105 mm mortar shell

@NitroDubs @DC5FAN @Terry I used the manufactured home hack to save up for my actual home. I am not a typical person because of my income, but we were able to buy a house in a decent area within 20 miles of a major metro area for less then 100k. I'm not sure how I feel about manufactured homes, mostly because you never own the land, and the repairs are all a non standard PITA, but it is doable. You will definitely pay less then rent.

@kc-poast @DC5FAN @Terry There’s no shame in manufactured or mobile homes. You’re correct in that parts (particularly plumbing) aren’t standard, but there are outlets that sell them. They makes a lot more sense than tiny homes.

@Terry @NitroDubs Close. However, I'm also looking at something for $50k right now. They actually had the nerve on the listing to say that it's best feature is you can drive to another rundown shithole for a job.

According to the community note that house is so cheap because it was a meth lab, the whole building is toxic.

@NitroDubs @kc-poast @Terry My parents had a prefab for about 10 years. It was nice. Many fond memories of that place.

@briar @DC5FAN @NitroDubs @Terry toxic like "I'm going to die painfully if I live here" or toxic like "Jews won't insure it"?
