I think "am ball ance" is AAVE maybe? I know it's not standard but "am bue lance" sounds overworked and overproper to me.

@futurebird I say “am bue lance”. But then I am indeed frequently overworked, so this checks out.

@futurebird I say "am-bue-lance" (or "-lunce", like someone else mentioned), but "am-ber-lance"/"-lunce" is also fairly common here (Ontario, Canada; lots of Irish and Scottish descendants right around here).

@puf @futurebird Yeah, same. That vowel sound in "lance" / "lunce" is the same as in "the" (in my Mancunian accent). Known as a "schwa", pretty sure: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mid_central_vowel

@picard @miblo @puf If you mix the "amb bue lense" some of the brits are talking about with the "ball" you get "am ball linse" which to me sounds VERY brooklyn in a way that would get you a side glance in the bronx. (as in why'd you come up here?)

@futurebird In Chicago or Indianapolis, it might be closer to "amble lambs" or "amble lants", depending on neighborhood, on the AAVE side of the language and "ambü lanz" on the German/Pole side.

@futurebird similar to am bue lance but I tend to pronounce the second a in ambulance differently than the a in lance 😅Like in "lance" it's a very clear "a" kinda sound? Like in "lack"? But in "ambulance" it's more of an "lunce"
