This is an excellent video. This is the message. Perhaps we need to refine it more. Find ways to communicate it more clearly. But this is the correct take on LLMs, so-called-AI and the proliferation of these tools to the general public. #LLM #llms #ai #genAI #video #slop #slopocalypse #enshittification https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4lKyNdZz3Vw

As a teacher, I vastly prefer #slopocalypse to #enshittification because swear words present problems in my line of work. I can't host a conversation about #enshittification with middle school students. Or rather I can but we'd need to call it something else. It's not a huge deal, and I think the swear word is ... valid in this context. It's a valid response to what has happened to much of the internet. But, it does present a needless barrier.

@futurebird I think the #slopocalypse and #enshittification are different concepts, aren't they? The latter is occurring independently from “AI”

@futurebird well, we can always wink wink and be clever with pronunciation. No, class, it's pronounced "Ens-hit-tification."

@krans You are correct slop is a feature of #enshittification which is a broader problem in the development of mass software and business models that work through software.

@futurebird I don't think they're interchangeable terms. It feels like "enshittification" is a broader term. I also have problems with that term, for different reasons though. I think it obscures who is doing the enshittification and we could instead call it "companies prioritising share price over user needs". Not as catchy, I'll admit.

@futurebird Ironic that Doctorow on his Daily Show appearance said that allowing people to swear was key to getting people to engage with enshittification as a concept.

@futurebird Because alternatives to "enshittification" often overlap in meaning only partially, "encrappification" or "crappification" may have mileage as a non-sweary (though mildly vulgar) option, since it's transparently a version of the same word and it works the same way morphologically

@futurebird I think of it as the battle of economics vs ethics. I suppose you could teach them about bait and switch? That’s an element of it.

@futurebird Needless barrier indeed. I want to boost your post because I absolutely fully agree, but I don't feel like I can because it has that word in it and I try to maintain a family-friendly feed. (This is not a criticism of your post, of course. How else would you talk about the word without using the word? It doesn't make a lot of sense to substitute the e-word or the s-word or whatever not-word we would use to talk about it.)

@futurebird Social taboos against expletives, or any word, are counterproductive. It's the context, and only the context, that matters. I use expletives, but they don't dominate my speech (even you know this) and they're never more than a linguistic condiment.A blanket taboo against against use of the N-word, for instance, unconstructively prohibits its use even in a comparative context ("what you're saying is just as bad as using the N-word"). I use that example because that has happened to me; mindless knee-jerk SJWs saw me write the word, ignored the comparative context, and went ballistic. This behavior has disturbing religious overtones. "Blasphemy!"Not being able to discuss enshittification because "blasphemy!" is just stupid. The very reason that words like "shit" become targets of fascination for children is precisely because of the taboos erected around them. It's thoroughly prudish or Victorian. You'd think we'd have learned, but humans have no Collective.

I don't think of those as quite the same thing, except that everthing is becoming one awful thing.I like "platform trap" for the economic capture Doctorow describes, since (a) it describes *how* it works so you can check if youre at risk pre-shit, BEFORE you're trapped; and (b) it is very bitey and snappy to say.@futurebird

@futurebird > Perhaps we need to refine it more. Find ways to communicate it more clearly. His sum up at the end is quite complete and not only valid for the #AI industry and it's manipulation of public discourse from the get go, but for industries and monetary interests at large.@ki_und_koffein

@futurebird I have always found it an infantile teen angsty word and I never use it. The phenomenon is an expected consequence of unregulated unchecked corporate greed. Using childish terms dilutes its seriousness.

@futurebird very good thank you. I’m actually not that worried about the tech itself (despite having to battle slop every day), but rather about the C suits who seem to think it can do our jobs.
