Do you financially support the media that you enjoy most often?If you enjoy posting on the fedi do you support your server? Other small servers?If you enjoy watching videos do you support the people who make them?If you read articles do you support the reporters?What about local theatre and music?If you have netflix money, spotify money, Hulu or Bobo or whatever money you have money that could do this.

We can talk about how it's bad that the media landscape is shaped by cash, but that isn't a reason to be complacent and tithe to six huge corporations who'd be fine without you and never sending a dime to the strange man who makes the creepy analog cat videos you watch every single day. Not to put too fine a point on it. There is one upside in all of this. When you support smaller creators you money has a MUCH bigger impact.

I support:* this server* other servers* the wikipedia* Karamu House Theatre* people who sell ant art* a ton of people who tiny youTube channels * Pregones Theatre* community gardens* xerces society* new SF authors selling their first book(it's aspirational)* building food and supplies pantry* When I need more money for these kinds of things I start looking for anything corporate I can cut out. Although most of this is possible due to ditching Amazon. Best decision ever.

@futurebird great argument! And that’s an impressive list.I’m proud to support my Fedi instance and a few online publications. I’m also a member of a cooperative that owns a national newspaper here in Germany.As you say: with this funding model, a little money can make a big difference.

Ultimately there is the "basic attention coin" [BAT] to create kinda structure that resembles this request, or idea, of yours @futurebird. Only that it is not restricted to the fedi, and well, of those second (or third) generation blockchain "scams".It's incorporated in the brave browser, a derivate of Chrome, that actually already had his scam incident .. so there is that.

@utopiarte I just look up the person who is doing the work that impresses me and find a way to send them money. I almost think that tech "solutions" in this way will be less effective and only encourage bottom feeders to show up.

@futurebird I do many of these things, after I have come to the conclusion that you cannot just criticize BigTech for their greed for everyone's data, but at the same time "enjoy" their "free" services.The original sin of the internet was that freebie mentality which drove everybody into the arms of BigTech, IMHO.

@futurebird I support my server, some non-profit journalists and news outlets, and indie TTRPG authors and bundle fundraisers. I occasionally donate to mutual aid requests on the Fedi, but sadly, there are a lot of them. I've dropped some streaming video services, and don't really miss them.
