“I know the massive datacenters being built just to host LLMs aren’t using a catastrophic amount of water because a YouTube science influencer worth $12 million with a long history of doing undeclared marketing for the tech told me it isn’t a problem” please stopthe tricks these fuckers pull to hide the damage they cause are well-known cause it’s the same tricks they used to build community-ruining datacenters for crypto, and you can look this up, but the SciShow won’t ever talk about it

I haven’t watched hank’s video because I avoid YouTube junk science (sorry garbage fans) but here’s the tricks I noticed from a distance:- “we can’t prove if the datacenters are using efficient closed-loop or inefficient open-loop cooling” we can by checking. they’re all open-loop, because it’s cheaper and faster to scale and the people behind this plan to make so much money they can dodge any personal consequences.cont.

- “nobody in the discourse acknowledges most of the water use is in power generation” we do, it’s a gigantic area where AI corps hide their actual usage, just like the crypto companies some of these assholes previously ran. like with crypto, the power generation being designed for datacenter use is poorly built and only ever intended for use by datacenters, never for the community. you can look up existing cases where power generation for crypto miners has made communities practically unlivable.

- “they’re lying to you” I don’t make money by being critical of AI. all I do is take on risk: the risk that I’ll be fired from my job or stalked by fanatics. doing critihype for the market’s current favorite tech is effectively risk-free, and it’s the type of move that probably comes pretty natural to someone with $12 million. there’s a couple of good documentaries on the bigger and richer YouTube science communicators’ role in doing undeclared marketing for TESCREAL ideas; please look them up.

That sounds super interesting! I can't find documentaries about this topic tho. Would you be so kind to point me in the right direction?

@zzt @map Seconded, please! 😀 There's one *very* popular science communicator who gives me the creeps for reasons I can't quite articulate, and this might explain that.

for anyone else confused because they thought the video in question was critical, or who’s here to be a bit of an asshole because I don’t watch marketing: welcome to 2025, where “these missiles are so dangerous! too dangerous to exist! unless… you bought them and used them for good…?” is how things are soldanyway here’s Green’s real beliefs on LLMs, ones he held long before he made the video in question: https://awful.systems/post/4099363/7102022note the establishment of a false center. this is critihype.

@emma @map thanks to search being a hellscape I can’t find the nicely packaged video I remember, but I’ve got an older series showing links between a large science communication channel and the EA part of TESCREAL and how that impacted their content, and sources showing financial links between SciShow and TESCREAL organizations, Green platforming a key TESCREAL figure, and some stuff for Hossenfelder tooI’m going to review the videos and links to make sure they hold up, then I’ll post them

@emma @map in a weird turn of events, as I was collecting the links for this, Internet of Bugs released a good video summarizing how several large science communication channels are doing critihype for AI: https://youtu.be/4lKyNdZz3Vw for further watching/reading, the links I was originally going to post:the first in a documentary series on Kurzgesagt acting as a greenwashing marketing arm of the Gates Foundation: https://youtu.be/uCuy1DaQzWI1/

now you might ask yourself, how does Green square his stance on LLMs with the videos whose thumbnails I’ve attached to this post?he doesn’t, of course. cloaking a rather extreme position (LLMs are worth the damage they cause) as centrism allows a critihype marketer to control all sides of the conversation — and minimize or distort inconvenient viewpoints.so no, I won’t be watching Green’s trash. I’ve seen the impact it’s had already, and responding to that is far more important.

@emma @map information on Kurzgesagt’s financial ties to Effective Altruism (the EA part of the TESCREAL belief package, effectively a way to funnel nonprofit funds into AI and cryptocurrency interests): https://awful.systems/post/2063781/4301425Philosophy Tube on Effective Altruism if you need a refresher: https://youtu.be/Lm0vHQYKI-YGreen has platformed Nate Soares in an interview. Soares is a central TESCREAL figure; he’s Yudkowsky’s coauthor on If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies: https://awful.systems/post/6080044/92589752/

@emma @map here’s Green doing critihype for LLMs on bluesky; note that “the tech is so useful it’s worth the damage it causes” is an extreme position presented as centrism: https://awful.systems/post/4099363/7102022this fucking terrible SciShow video was just sponsored by ControlAI: https://youtu.be/90C3XVjUMqE. Internet of Bugs mentions this but they’re kinder than I am. ControlAI is a TESCREAL organization, and even a disclosed sponsorship arrangement means SciShow is doing paid marketing for them.3/

@emma @map and because no thread about science communicators is complete without it, here’s Sabine Hossenfelder talking out her ass in favor of AI: https://awful.systems/post/3608350/6400396 with a link to a video about Sabine also going full TERF. here’s SneerClub’s resident physicist tearing into Sabine’s latest arXiv paper: https://awful.systems/post/5930794/9070600hopefully the pattern is clear. the state of science communication on YouTube is fucking dire.end
