@NiwlCraft why you think AI is not Solarpunk?

@TheOneSwit @NiwlCraftWhy do you think that AI is #solarpunk? To me, AI (as in LLMs) and solar punk are completely incompatible concepts.

@alexanderondu @NiwlCraft neither solar nor punk are speaking against technology. Just about how to use. We could also speak about how cars should fit into a solarpunk world?

@TheOneSwit @NiwlCraftWe actually do discuss cars in #Solarpunk? Like, all the time? Discussing individual mobility, the reliance on fuel/energy, hard to obtain spare parts and know-how that is hard to maintain on a small-community base is like one of the main topics of solarpunk? And AI is neither "solar" because of its tremendous need of ressources, nor "punk" since it relies on a monolithic caste of secretbearers.

@alexanderondu @NiwlCraft yeah, and we speak about how a car could work with solarpower as an example. Not "Cars are bad, we have to abolish individual transport"

@TheOneSwit @NiwlCraftYeah, and all the problems I mentioned above are true for solar powered cars: Replacing parts like collectors, cells or controllers is quite easy. Repairing one or building it from scratch will be hard in a post industrial era.But let's be done with this tangent and return to the original matter.AI/LLMs need so many ressources and so much expert knowledge and yet provide so little that is actually useful, I do not see any reason to pursue this endeavor.#Solarpunk

@alexanderondu @TheOneSwit @NiwlCraft Any exploration of AI/LLM in a solarpunk world would need to consider why it is necessary vs training living beings.I can see an exploration involving finding the technology abandoned because it was too resource intensive and treating it like a detective story..."what were they trying to build? why did it fail? could it be made whole in this new world?" etcThere are the small models that people are playing with but that's not what folks are using...

@alexanderondu @TheOneSwit @NiwlCraft To generate images instead of hiring artists. And, although the smaller models might somehow work in a solarpunk setting, one would need to understand that as long as the environmentally destructive, corporate models exist, those are the versions we know to be incompatible with the ideas solarpunk is working with.

@clarablackink @alexanderondu @NiwlCraft How do you print a book? Do you pay somebody to make you a copy by hand like in the old days? Why not?Should we ask Michelangelo what he thinks of an artist today? A friend of mine studied graphic design. He is not working with a pencil. Is your Solarpunk about living without electricity?

@TheOneSwit @clarablackink @NiwlCraft#Solarpunk is about building communities that distribute tasks on a eye-to-eye level.#Solarpunk communities don't need to be self-sufficient, medieval, agricultural, backwater villages. But one of the main questions in solarpunk is: What can a community achieve without the need for a highly specialized, expert driven economy?Cars and advanced electronics are a gray area. The hyperscaler computer infrastructure needed for #AI is definitely out of bounds.
