I really hope with the Steam Machine, Steam Frame and Steam Deck together - that certain press teams will finally stop saying "PC" in their emails and actually be clearer on platforms. It's not difficult: "Linux, macOS, Windows"

@gamingonlinuxTo be that guy: A lot of Macs in use today are no longer PC in their architecture anyway.

@rustynail @gamingonlinux if you asked me with no resources, i'd say it probably did, but i would have to check to be sure :D

@ozzelot@mstdn.social @rustynail@floss.social @gamingonlinux@mastodon.socialPS3, Xbox 360 and PowerPC Macs — all of them were "current" products at the same time at some point. And yet we somehow find ourselves with Intel shite again… 😖

@m0xEE @rustynail @gamingonlinux Macs are now ARM, which... well, gives Apple the overbearing control over them it always wanted. So not great either.

@m0xEE @rustynail @gamingonlinux (That's not the ARMness of it, that's owed to the fact the silicon is highly custom)

@ozzelot@mstdn.social @rustynail@floss.social @gamingonlinux@mastodon.socialYeah, I was hopeful for ARM about that same time — 20 years ago, it looked like another viable alternative. And despite some things getting standardised — there are device trees now, some machines use EFI even, not some custom fork of uBoot… But the platform still remains pretty much closed, perhaps even more than Intel. Yes, there are multiple chip makers (which was also true for x86 at some point — there were Cyrix, AMD and Intel itself), but most just make them out of bigger licensed construction blocks — others, like Apple, make something highly-customised and even more closed down 😩

@rustynail @ozzelot @gamingonlinux not quite. Marcan explains it in the Console Hacking 2016 talk at 33c3, but the PlayStation 4 is actually very incompayible with the IBM 5150 architecture that PCs are descended from, with the x86 CPU and PCIe bus being some of the few things they have in commonInfact, new ARM macs are much more PC-like than a PS4/5 or Xbox One/Series

@reiddragon @rustynail @gamingonlinux part of me that once said "it's not quite a pc" to someone, but was unable to immediatelly recall the facts of it, feels vindicated
