Anyone using XigmaNAS based on #FreeBSD ? Is it any good for setting up a home nas or would I be better off just using straight FreeBSD ? #RunBSD

@justine@snac.smithies.me.uk consolidated my NAS into my Proxmox after the death of TrueNAS Core, but if I would set up a separate NAS now: pure FreeBSD.

@justine I was originally planning to run TrueNAS Core, then when that was deprecated I looked at Zvault, but that still hadn't reached a stable release yet.Eventually decided that for my needs pure FreeBSD would be better, and I could just install Sylve if I found I wanted a nice frontend. One day I will actually find the time to complete the setup and get it operational

@justine I used to run XigmaNAS and it's predecessors Nas4Free and the original FreeNAS. It works well if you only need the built in functions and can be far easier to use if you're not good with a command line, but if you're wanting to run custom software, you might be better off starting with a vanilla FreeBSD. This is especially true if you're skilled at the shell prompt. It really depends on what you want your NAS to do for you...
