I ask this on the regular, apologies: how do you manage your images?do you have good mechanism, (Linux) app or script to sort images into categories, tag them? I have way too many images. I tried various AI tools, also looked at boorus and local image apps, all without much success. I'd prefer automatic tagging, but manual is fine too if batch processing is allowed.:mashiroThankYou:

@kaia theway I used to do this was I had a folder system, and I used a firefox extension that could context-save into different directories. firefox broke it at some point

@kaia Have folders for different categories and make new ones when enough of a specific sub-category accumulate. When you save an image, name it with a keyword(s) you think you'll associate with it the most. If you're one of those people who download massive chunks of pictures they're never going to look at, seek help. Curation is always preferable to hoarding.

@moth_ball @kaia this is good advice. I try to give every pic I save a relevant filename. cat_falling_off_couch.gif is easier to find later than ASHFJGKHK-54783836.gif.

@kaia I just manually sort them, generally trying to type a descriptive name when saving them so it's a lot easier later. It's not perfect but 60 hours of manually sorting images beats making my soul unclean by touching code.

@kaia For actual photos I take, I use a system of labels and folders in Lightroom that I diligently apply on import. For everything else (memes, interesting images) I use a directory hierarchy. I sometimes add metadata to the file (xattrs on macOS) that help me find some files.

@kaia darktable has a pretty good image collection part, with categories, tags, colors, etc (I used it to sort and tag my 16 go photo backup, it's massively manual though)

@kaia I wrote a really basic server that lets you browse and tag images. unfortunately it still uses manual tagging. I didn't design it for others to use, so it's fairly idiosyncratic and poorly documented; but if you'd like to try it out, I can send you the repository.

@Vo @kaia I have Hydrus set up, but haven't really been using it. Mostly things are just stuck in various directories and I pray that I will find what I'm looking for when I want a specific image.

@coldacid @kaia yeah, IMO setting yourself up for future finding via easily-accessed/portable means beats meticulously-archiving and tagging everything only for that database to only be accessible from a certain system.Filenames and paths are universal but limited, databases tend to be localized but flexible.

@Vo @kaia I do intend to use it, my one real sticking point is that Hydrus is entirely local to a single machine and I want something that sits on one of my servers that I can access from any of my computers around the house. The so-called Hydrus server is only for syncing metadata with other users around the net in a peer-to-peer fashion, not for managing centralized asset storage.
