       @judgedread For years you have been relentlessly pressuring /ourguys/ to not trust smartphones and *especially* not to bring them anywhere near IRL meetings of /ourguys/, public protests, etc.  Those of us who were paying attention assumed that state actors have compromised these devices.Recently I learned that the situation is even worse:  the ability to use these devices to retroactively track people's location and figure out who one's enemies are coordinating with IRL is now available to *civilians*.  This means that hostile organizations like the ADL don't even need to subvert state actors to get important metadata about us.  Be careful out there, everyone!

       @Countermeasures @judgedread it’s actually worse than thatcontinuous AI-mediated orbital surveillance, and ownership of and/or ability to compromise a very large fraction of terrestrial cameras, means that if you become a person of interest you can be traced back in space and time a lot further and with far greater accuracy than you think even if you take precautions to avoid carrying “trackers” with youautomated inference systems can catch you when you think you’re being clever, tooexample:you ditch your cellphone and all identifying stuff, then have somebody drive you to a parking garage, where you get out and suddenly “appear” to go and Do Things; you are then picked up the same wayyou’re in the clear, right?  lol noif they are adequately motivated to do so, they can walk backward from the Event to the first place where you appeared, then draw a box around that location where their ghost teleported into the universe and iteratively exclude everybody else by working backwards from their travel and association information, thereby identifying a suspicious-looking gap in your personal motion biography aligning perfectly with the window that indicates that they should maybe be interested in youat that point it’s simply a question of starting to probe Ring cameras nearby your travel path until they see you; all of that is what they can do with just visible-spectrum information, too, we haven’t even gotten into the good stuff yetthis is a very hard problem to solve in the presence of ubiquitous automated surveillance and the reason I created this infographic; it is very, very difficult to avoid getting to Level 6 on this ladder if they are motivated to look for you(water is your friend here, owing to its impressively broad and efficient absorption spectrum, but most people aren’t exactly SEALs and that’s pretty much what you have to be in order to actually make effective use of it, which ability and equipment tends to reduce the search space for you on its own)

       @VaxxSabbath @Countermeasures @judgedread The technology is there but the competence to apply it properly becomes scarcer. Apparently we can be uniquely id now by the unique disturbance our bodies produce in the signals of a basic WiFi router (not even requiring a mesh network).

       @AlpineEnjoyer @Countermeasures @judgedread circumventing these issues does require a bit of thought, a lot of preparation, some basic understanding of electromagnetic theory, and an instinct for epistemic hygienethe key is to make the SQL query for you in the Great Global Database return either no records owing to conflicting constraints, or so many records as to make the given underlying test observation useless for the purposes of reducing the search space for you, forcing the opponent to resume the default technique:  intractable brute-force(“Repent, Harlequin!  said the Ticktockman”)pervasive, sleepless cybernetic control grids do make that harder, but there are gaps that can be exploited if you are aware of the physics and the limitations involved, and are prepared to put the work in to exploit them

       @VaxxSabbath When confronted by the feds, and looking over what they had and where it came from, I knew it took them a good deal of pain to get it.  I was as pleased as one can be when one is dealing with a pair of FBI pups fresh out of training.
